Definitely a fair point. But I assume that will be happening to me next year in regards to FA (for 3L). But 30k > the (likely) 10k I will lose. Either way, 30k is more than I would lose in grants, and even your example would have you getting a net profit of 15k. Finally the experience of working as a 1L SA should create better opportunities for OCI.tkgrrett wrote:Unfortunately, the worst element about Harvard's financial aid policy is that significant summer earnings absolutely destroy any grant aid you planned on getting. For instance, making 30k in NYC over 10 weeks would reduce grants for the next year by ~$14,400. After taxes and housing/living expenses you would be lucky to end up with 2-3k leftover from your summer job. For grant recipients, summer employment is financially worthless. The only hope for reducing loans is to get an SA that comes with a big scholarship.Moxie wrote:
Finally, one small note, I know quite a few HLS URMs who have 1L SAs (myself included), and with better odds of that, you could take another 25-30k off your debt level.
In summary - visit the schools, but all else equal, HLS' prestige and employment opportunities usually make it worth it.
Further note - I did not do SEO, but I agree that (half?) of URM 1L SAs I know claimed SEO contacts were the reason.
