I'm just not convinced the employment LOR is really a big deal. Worst comes to worst, they reject you outright. Why not give them the opportunity?
Depending on your stats, they might turn a blind eye, if they care at all.
They emailed me and asked for it

On the plus side for others, apparently they
do take a 'holistic look' at your application and actually read your LORs.
Shit. That sucks. I guess you know best. As a last ditch effort, I might tell them what you shared here about the need to be discrete. In the professional world, I've been able to get by on 1 or 2 recommendations when the job might have called for three due to the need to be discrete with a current employer. You can't be the first person to have that problem with Columbia, maybe they will be understanding if you push back?
When did you submit your Columbia app, if you don't mind me asking?

Oh no, I'm sorry :/ Is there any way you could let them know that your employer would not be able to give you the rec because they don't know you're applying to schools? Or you could get one from a past employer?
Edit: scooped.

Would anyone mind reading my first 250 draft?
Or alternatively tell me if "moral agent" is a commonly enough used term that I don't have to explain it?
Don't quote please. Still trying to do what I can to stay anonymous!

Okay, am I alone in really wanting an email from Columbia? I'd like to ride in their email wave of acceptances...

Totally not alone. I keep refreshing my inbox but...nothing.

Definitely not alone, though I doubt I will be hearing from them for a while.

Really? Why's that? When did you apply? I went complete 11/10. But a couple of admits had complete dates in December.

Can we discuss the poll? Bored at work. Why okay with sticker at various places?

Spending 10 years doing public interest work sounds pretty awesome to me. Sticker at NYU with PSLF + LRAP + no Tax liability would be dope.

+1
At least wait for Columbia to ask for the rec.
Call and explain your situation regarding the recommendation letter. I find that pretty silly from CLS. Do they they think employers like seeing their employee leave for school?
Does CLS require the letter to come from the employer or can you have a coworker write the letter for you?

Thanks for the advice, guys! They require it to be from your most recent boss or supervisor. I'll see about contacting them, I just didn't want to come off as entitled.

There's nothing wrong with advocating for yourself respectfully, whether you're dealing with Columbia or whoever.

I see the validity of this however I'm scared to death that PSLF is going to be capped or otherwise radically altered in the near future.

Valid concerns.
I don't think this Congress is going to pass a budget or a major bill by this summer. After that, I'll have already taken out the first loans. After that, I think the being grand fathered in to the old policy despite new loans is pretty likely.
Plus LRAP was around before PSLF, I think law schools will adapt to fit whatever federal forgiveness scheme emerges.
I'm less concerned about PSLF going away than I am about not landing and securing PI employment 10 years in a row.

Before submitting apps, I was like "I'll pay sticker at any T14" and now I'm like "WTF why is it actually this expensive?!" so I voted YHS since they don't do merit aid. I think I would pay sticker at NYU (since it's an actual option) if it wasn't in NYC with a ridiculously high COA/COL. Hoping for some type of aid.

I've kinda had the opposite turn - before I submitted I was like "I'll take the best financial aid offer I can get" and now I'm looking at lower T14 substantial scholly (not full tuition) vs. Harvard (not knowing about aid yet but presumably a lot less) and I'm like...but the doors H opens...but their great LRAP...but Boston is so much better for my SO's career...and so on. Basically I've discovered my inner prestige whore.
I only voted Y and S in the poll though. I have personal reasons for loving Stanford and Yale is Yale.

I voted YHS in the poll, but as I just told my co-workers, I am blessed to be an old man with no assets (I've been down for the people), so need-based aid works very well for me at those schools.
