Woo-hoo! Ann Arbor is a beautiful, swirling winter wonderland! I'm safe and warm, underground, not unlike a mole, and outlining!
I'm excited about the former and not the latter, for the record.
When I stepped outside for an emergency mocha I felt like I was in a snow globe! This is really our first real snow (winter weather notice) this year and on December 1st.
Psh to all y'all harbingers of doom--it is not bad at all here. I rather enjoy the weather. No winter in December = weird.
-----------
In other news, I got into the enviro law class I wanted for next summer.
Back to the books...the lie berry closes at midnight.

At least I'm hoping success smells like string cheese, because then I've got it in the bag. Down here, wedged in a cubicle buried underground in the law library, I've been aquiring rodent-like habits: I eat pounds of string cheese, twitch, and furtively glance around me. This cubicle has become aaaaawfully nest-like, what with nibbled scraps of cardbard and shavings I've laid down so I don't have to leave to go to the bathroom.
Why I should get an A in civpro:
Today, the very last day of the very last class in the very last time I'll ever take civil procedure, I chose not to bring my books. Not only that, but I went to class with a rather (perhaps palpable?) bad attitude. Civ pro is over. Not quite, unfortunately, because during that very last day of the very last class of the very last time of civpro, I was the very last person cold-called on the very last page of the supplement.
Seriously? I flipped through my good-natured friends' supplement to answer a bunch of ridiculous questions about coupons. I got to a question about a lodestar and thought to myself "Oh, I hope he doesn't plan on asking me what a lodestar is, because I will absolutely have to bullshit it. I will Balderdash the hell out of it if...if" my thoughts were interrupted by another question:
"Ms. __, and what is a lodestar?"
FANtastic. I just laughed (I did a fairly decent job stringing together the earlier Qs) and said "You know, prof, that's a great question. I was just thinking that I have no idea what that means. I'm going to go ahead and have to guess that a 'lodestar' is a star-shaped dump truck."
Naturally, he was not amused. He did, in his ever-so-clever way, suggest that then it'd be spelled "L-O-A-D," so my answer was wrong. I told him that I was referencing it phonetically, and that "I would hope that I could spell 'load' for real, too. R-E-E-L."
-------------after class and how i lost my mind (some more)------------
I found a fantastic new study spot. Enclosed, rays of sunlight glittered through the old pressed glass into this warm, woody study area. I opened the door, expecting loud chatter or rustling, but nothing. I found an overstuffed leather chair and an ottomon away from the others (there were very few there, anyway). I set up shop and began to eat a sandwich before stuying.
Out of nowhere, I girl walked straight for me. Do I know her? Did I drop a wallet? Do I look just like the thief that stole her purse last night? No. Unfortunately, nyet. Instead of selecting one of any of the 30 or so available seats, she pops a squat directly across from me.
Annoyed beyond words, thoughts, or sensations, I decided to ignore her and eat my sandwich. Feeling a burning in my forehead and the temperature rising in my sandwich, I look up to see Buddy Friendly staring at me while I eat. Are you kidding me?
I almost lost my mind. I texted all of my friends and told them how I was going to lose it, completely, forever. I calmed myself and pulled out my book, but then the girl decided to push me over the edge.
She moved her chair two feet closer to me and then got up as if looking for an outlet. She finally found one--next to my chair--and walked the few inches to go and plug it in. She returned to her seat (failing to move her chair back) and proceeded to return to her laptop as if she weren't closer to me than my boyfriend, parents, or soul currently or have ever been and began tippety-tapping away.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not claustrophobic, I'm not antisocial, and I don't mind touchy-feely people. But there is some unspoken rule that When Studying, You Never, Ever Sit Directly Across From or Next to Another Person [Stranger] Unless It's Clear That There Are No Alternatives; Even Then You Give Them the Helpless and Beseeching "I'm Sorry, But You Know How It Is" Look and Then You Both Pretend That You're Not Inhaling and Exhaling the Same Steamy Air.
I hope that I've made this clear. I had to leave, I had to. It was ridiculous. It was like having Britney Spears as a neighbor, except worse. I'm back in the cubicle still fuming, 1 1/2 hrs later. Well, not really.
Back to the books.

Oh my gosh.
I unloaded my laptop and opened up in the quietest corner of the library today...and Britney Spears "Piece of Me" was on BLAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't make it stop, not even by shutting my laptop!!! I almost lost my mind, I couldn't mute my computer, either! It was like one of thse nightmares you have when you're nakey and there's nothing you cand do!
Last night I was showing her new vid to my roommate when my computer died. Usually it just logs me out and whatever music is playing will stay on...it sort of freezes up, in a way, until you plug it in. I just shut it and went to bed (the music does eventually stop, but it depends).
I am so embarrassed. I just yelled "I'm so sorry!" and scurried out with the (thankfully) silent laptop and cord so I could boot it up and put it on mute. EEEK! What an embarrassing song to have so damned loud...in the library...the LAW library...DURING FINALS!!!!

If you are what you say you are, a superstar
Then have no fear, the camera's is here
And the microphone's
And they wanna' know oh oh oh oh
If you are what you say you are, a superstar
Then have no fear, the crowd is here
And the lights are on
And they wanna show oh oh oh oh, yeah

Well...I have two assignments already for school. Not bad, not bad, but it's just a small reminder that break won't last forever.
Next semester: Crim, con, torts & an environmental law course (+ legal practice).
Just gearing up, that's all. ktlulu's available grade (despite their supposed January release) made me navigate through the web like I was on FIYAH. No grades there.
I'm reading Books For Fun, which is always a pleasure. Ratings 1*-5*
-The World Without Us *****
-The Curious Incident of the Dog In the Night-Time ****
-Everything About Me Is Fake and I'm Perfect! *
-The Brief, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (tbd)

Seriously, checked my schedule...3 classes on Monday, 4 TWThF. YES. 9am everyday.
Two classes prohibit laptops.
I might as well not use a laptop at all. Where can I even buy pens, nay, quills? Ink jars? Do I have to defeather my own...own...what the hell type of birds provide those crucial writing tools? Owls? Eagles? Yes. I'm going to pluck a Bald Eagle and use it to write my con law notes. Perfect!
Anyway, I'm kind of excited about this semester, because I have an idea of 1) what law school is and 2) I have some experience with these topics, so they won't be as foreign as property/contracts/civpro.
In case you haven't narrowed it down yet, I'm in con, crim, and torts. Also taking an environmental law course (YES!!) and the ol' legal practice.
I'm doing the whole firm thing and it's going slooowly. Haven't heard back from most, 2 "no 1L" dings, and one "you sound good but grades, please" from another, and an offer.
I'm also applying for this Fantastic Fellowship. One lucky person will be jettisoned to Dewey LeBoeuf's London office for 6-8 weeks, flat paid for, then they'll spend the rest of the summer in the NY office. I waaaaaant it.
I have a bunch of assignments looming over me already. Quiz on Friday, paper due next Sunday, assignments for the first day of class. I like the beginning of school, is that weird?
No grades yet.
Haven't paid $489372947392347923472 for books yet, but I did try to resell my three texts for...FORTY DOLLARS!!!! Are you kidding? Each individual piece of text-page is more valuable as toilet paper!
Anyway, back to doing more stuff.

I'm recovering nicely from the surgery that removed all of my organs with a melon scoop in exchnge for three textbooks.
My con law text is the biggest book I've ever seen in my life. I'm already the little girl with a big backpack; I cringe at the new silhoutte I'll have with this book in tow.
Today is my last day before classes. I have at least 3 a day, some days 4, and on Fridays sometimes 5. AY YAY YAY YA ASYAYAYYAY
I'm applying for a foreign language fellowship here. Wish me luck, I'm applying for the Portuguese and Hindi programs.
Other than that, I'm engaged in a fiery war of innerturmoil: Do I do my work, do I say "Nay, curse you, I shall savor my last day of freedom," or just debate between the two? It's best if I just knock out my work now and then spend the rest of the day doing nothing.
Saw and liked, loved:
Atonement
No Country for Old Men
Want to see:
4 days, 3 hours, 2 minutes
Diving Bell & the Butterfly (although I'd rather read it first)
The Orphanage
There Will Be Blood
***New Year's Resolutions***
1. Do stand up comedy at least once.
2. Wean myself from bringing books home.
3. Appreciate people more, or let them know more often that I do.

Every problem I have ever had since I was born is about to be solved...with this:
--LinkRemoved--
Behold! Modified from its helpful yet flawed predecessor, this bad boy allows you to write notes (on a special notebook, unfortunately, but which doesn't cost much more than notebooks these days) and then upload them to your computer.
"So what?" you say, a smirk on your face and your eyes dulled with ignorance and disinterest.
Unlike the older models, once you upload the handwritten notes to your computer, the software can turn them into word documents!!! Now I can ctrl + F my life!!! I am in the future RIGHT NOW!!! At $79 this is a steal, in my opinion. I was fretting over how I was going to organize all of my handwritten notes (how do I combine the home notes and class notes? Should I use nasty pencil so I don't have to keep scratching things out?) but here is the Solution of all Solutions!!!
It also stores mp3s (so?) and has an integrated translator and alegbra problem doer!!!
I'm going right now to get one.

Re: Britt: Gearin' Up for 1.5L
After The Least Productive Week of My Life, I'm back in gear. Catching up on some reading, doing a little supplemental reading (how many elements of a crime are there, my God), and preparing for the date auctiona at my school. Ah yes, I'm in it. I realized that it was pretty bad that the org I'm in (who is putting it on) didn't have any members in it...now there are a few, including myself. Oh, the horror. My theme song: "Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless)" by Crystal Waters. I'm also trying to find a ridiculous Kentucky Derby hat to wear. Good luck (I miss the South).
I've also gotten on board for TWO environmental projects (pro bono) that deal with Michigan issues. I'm thrilled. I'm going to have to super-stay-on-the-ball to make it happen with school work and such, but I'm very excited.
I like writing in here on occasion--I know a few "old school" TLSers don't so much, but it's a good way to put my jumbled, random thoughts on paper/not paper.
I've also decided that, despite the fact that I'm not a marriage planning type of girl, ESPECIALLY given the fact that 1) I have no plans to do it soon and 2) I am not dating anyone (unascertained future spouse), I have chosen a song that will play in some capacity at aforementioned wedding:
http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=INn1C6ImJKg
lyrics:
I lie awake
I've gone to ground
I'm watching porn
In my hotel dressing gown
Now I dream of you
But I still believe
There's only enough for one in this
Lonely hotel suite
The journey's long
And it feels so bad
I'm thinking back to the last day we had.
Old moon fades into the new
Soon I know I'll be back with you
I'm nearly with you
I'm nearly with you
When I'm weak I draw strength from you
And when you're lost I know how to change your mood
And when I'm down you breathe life over me
Even though we're miles apart we are each other's destiny
On a clear day
I'll fly home to you
I'm bending time getting back to you
Old moon fades into the new
Soon I know I'll be back with you
I'm nearly with you
I'm nearly with you
When I'm weak I draw strength from you
And when you're lost I know how to change your mood

Re: Britt: Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination.
I. Love. My. Section. Yeah, they all seemed cool last semester, but now that I've sloughed off a layer of dry, crackling and burdensome skin (ie broke up with the 1st semester boyf) I've been able to go out a lot more with these quality folks.
These people are hilarious. I'm excited to go to school today...because my classmates are that money.
In other news, I have been going out quite a bit. That is all.

Re: Britt: Sanity and happiness are an impossible combination.
Can I also just say that I am loving law school right now (today)? I'm certain it will all explode in my face come finals, but it's so much better this semester. Last semester was bearable; I had cool classmates, my classes were interesting but challenging, everything was alright.
Now it's incredible. It really helps to have other things going on, although I do not recommend it first semester, you just can't.
I'm working on two pro bono environmental matters--I get to work on an amicus brief! I just learned how to say "amicus!" There are amazing speakers that come to this school--someone from a sweet firm is coming to speak about his environmental law project finance work. What? Why didn't I ever think of that? He is doing exactly what I want to do! I have to meet this guy.
I competed in an oral advocacy competition this weekend. Fun...I should have worked harder though. I've got a mock oral today! This is great. My professor brought doughnuts for everyone today.
So back to my work, but this is great. I hope it stays like this and I hope I'm actually allowed to have this much fun without failing.
Now it's incredible. It really helps to have other things going on, although I do not recommend it first semester, you just can't.
I'm working on two pro bono environmental matters--I get to work on an amicus brief! I just learned how to say "amicus!" Re: Britt: Prez of Slacklandia called. Said I'm a great job.
Where am I now?
About 200 pages into torts and crim law, all over the place in con law. I'm definitely behind in my readings. Today is the day that I get back in the zone, but it's been so fun lately.
I think everyone realizes that there's more to life than, well, law school. I've never had this much fun before. I'm surrounded by witty, sincere, and classy people. How did I get so lucky?
I had my first oral argument before the senior judges and my legal practice professor. It went over really well. As much as I thought I wouldn't, I think I'm going to push towards litigation. It's just...my thing. My skill set, I should clarify, would make me a better litigator than transactional attorney. I even like the idea of the writing and paper shuffling involved as a junior associate. Weird? Of course there's more to it than those two options, but I've been on the fence.
I'm doing two pro bono matters for an environmental firm here. It's amazing the opportunities that are available; I'm writing an amicus brief for our clients. I suppose I should pick up the pace with my schoolwork...this semester is going to come down to a head, I can just tell. Luckily, I selected an elective with no exam.
I'm still not sure where I'll be this summer. Definitely New York for at least part of the summer. I'm interviewing for a spot that'd split me between London and New York, but honestly, I'm not sure how it will go. There's only one position left. It's Tuesday! Bah!
Must work.

Re: Britt, armored polar bear
My interview is tomorrow. I'm buzzing with nerves and excitement. It means I'll miss a day of class, but I've got friends taking notes for me. Eek!
Also, for all of you Michigan fans, check out these blogs by 1, 2, and 3L students. I'll be blogging there, soon. They're pretty fun to read and informative, too.
