Seriously, I hate the Gators. These past few years have been nauseating.js87 wrote:I never thought I'd root for Alabama, but this weekend I am. I'm so sick of Tebow. The enemies of my enemies are my friendsMoose Thompson wrote:

I am in the same boat. Looking to go into Environmental law, public sector. The debt I would accumulate at UM is difficult to swallow and I applied too late to get any money.randyn wrote:UM full sticker 40k
vs.
FIU TTTT 14k
I am highly anticipating acceptances to both, but am unsure whether I will get money from UM.
I don't care about big law but I do want solid employment prospects in south Florida.
*need to live in SFL
Edit: Accepted to both FIU and UM.

...and if you DO have any BigLaw desire, abandon all hope right about now.js87 wrote:What is your goal? If you don't have any biglaw desire, take FIU and minimize your debt load. It's an up and coming school in the region. Just avoid Nova and St Thomas like the plague

Re: UM VS. TTTT in south Floria
Let me put an end to this thread. And quickly.
I have spoken to hiring partners of some of miami's biggest firms. And a lot are UM grads. They don't see tremendous differencess between these programs (and, for that matter, across most of the programs in the state).
FIU is legitimately up and coming. Miami has an abhorrent, near-apocalyptic debt to job prospect ratio. If you can't get into UF or even FSU, go to FIU. At least, even if you can't land a decent firm job, you won't kick yourself for saddling yourself with an additional 70k in debt.
For the record, my mom is a partner at a big firm in miami. She was magna at UM.

Considering FIU ... .
FIU's bar passage rate is very good, but their grading curve is rough. <<important factor in a very competitive South Fl. market.
take everything into account.
FIU has a very promising future.
the new building (huge courtroom, library), great faculty + awesome weather should make it very pleasant to go there.

I have the booklets for both schools and while FIU's is thicker it mostly profiles the faculty and administration where UM's actually details the Miami Scholars Program and other activities students can participate in.
I wonder if I can participate in these programs even though they are not specifically advocated in the FIU materials, or are they only for students of particular schools...

If you think that the late application is the only thing holding you back from money at Miami, I suggest you wait a year. The 23k scholarship is worth at least 23k (do not maintain requisite gpa) at most 69k (maintain gpa). I think those savings more than offset the opportunity cost of putting off school for a year, especially if you can find something worthwhile to do for that year.tigerlilly17 wrote:I am in the same boat. Also, if you have numbers to get $$ at UM, you must have gotten a full ride at FIU, right? Also, no FSU/UF option?whuts4lunch wrote:If you think that the late application is the only thing holding you back from money at Miami, I suggest you wait a year.
