biglaw prospects at Hastings
I was curious as to what people thought the needed placement for biglaw/clerkships at a school like Hastings would be, I've heard conflicting reports. any ideas?

Take a look at the OCI firm list on Hastings website.
Top 25-30% will likely get big law through OCI. Top 40-50 will eventually get mid- to big- law within 9 months. How did I get to this? Well 250 of 422 grads reported salaries. 199 of these were employed by private law firms at an average salary of 125k. 199/422 = 47%. And that's assuming that NONE of the 40% that didn't reply to the survey got jobs at private firms. Essentially, worst case scenario for someone hovering around the 50% range is 75-80k.
Career stats (note that these are based on 60% of grads replying):

You can see the requirements that each firm sets (top 30%, top 15%, Moot Court, Law Review, etc.)

Take a look and help me out with my math...I think my figures are correct but would like a second opinion.
Also these stats are from 2007 and that was before the financial shit hit the fan (Oct 2008) so in this economy the situation may not be as rosy.
EDIT: Sorry that I did not address your questions about clerkships. My impression is that top 30% would be in good shape for those and the opportunities should be plentiful given the # of judges from Hastings.
EDIT 2: What do you think about the new curve at Hastings? Only the bottom 12-17% will now get C's or worse. And since the classes will be 20% LEOP, I am thinking that top 40% is definitely doable. Any thoughts?

From the law firm link it appears that most $160K firms REQUIRE top 10-20% ranking for 2l OCI. Sounds about right...

Hah -- I am back as a Hastings 1L this time. It looks like right now, top 15% is necessary but not sufficient for biglaw. That is the cutoff just to interview at OCI, and the hire rate among that 15% seems to be fairly low at this point.BoomBoom1986 wrote:Anyone else have any thoughts?
I don't know if or when Hastings will return to the top 25-30% getting big/midlaw. The point is, don't expect biglaw out of Hastings...plan on a worse case minimum salary of around 70k and see if you can survive your debt at that salary. If you can't earn at least 70k in the private sector, I believe PICAP applies to everyone below that salary doing public interest.
