USC Cybersecurity & Privacy law 2020

Post by savagemode21 » Tue Oct 22, 2019 8:04 pm

USC Gould to roll out new cyber-security program next fall. Anybody have an idea of what it will take to get into this program? Thinking this industry will grow and grow over next 10-15 years. Also will this be strictly a masters or a JD or combined program? Thanks. Dropping the link below.

With respect to J.D. programs, specialties/concentrations are generally meaningless/irrelevant w.r.t. job placement. All else equal, a T13 law school grad will still be (much) more competitive for cybersecurity/privacy law jobs than a USC grad, even if the USC grad gains a "cybersecurity"/"privacy" notation on their diploma/transcript, and even if USC's new program ends up being ranked #1 in USNWR's specialty ranking.

With respect to non-J.D./LL.M. programs, MSL degrees and the like are generally completely useless, except in very limited situations, and even in those situations the MSL degree is unlikely to significantly improve one's job prospects. E.g., a veteran legal news reporter or a senior person in a law-adjacent position may find a MSL degree useful in helping them get a better understanding of the law, but the MSL itself would be unlikely to significantly improve their career prospects. They would still not be able to practice law or market themselves as lawyers.

In addition to these kinds of programs mostly being a cash-grab, cybersecurity/privacy law is already a massive industry. It's not "growing"; it's already huge.
