Canadian student intersted in attending an American law school

Post by Nicholas Saunders » Mon Apr 10, 2017 6:42 pm

I am currently a third year undergraduate student attending a Canadian university. I am very interested in attending law school after I complete my bachelor's degree. My current GPA is 3.8 and I have scored between 170 and 175 on numerous online practice LSAT tests, although I'm not fully aware of how representative they are of the actual LSAT. While I plan on applying to as many Canadian law schools as I can, I am also considering applying to some American law schools. I have two general questions: One, assuming that my GPA remains at 3.8 and I score between 170 and 175 on the LSAT, what kind of chance would I have at gaining admission to a high-level American law school program, such as the law programs offered at Georgetown, University of Chicago, Cornell, Berkley, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, or, to really get ridiculous, Yale, Harvard or Stanford? Two, how difficult would it be for an immigrant to the US who had graduated with a JD from one of these institutions to find employment in the US compared to a native-born or naturalized US citizen?

Assuming that the 3.8 is out of a 4.0, you will be able to get into all the schools you mentioned except maybe YS if you get a 175 just because it is a crapshoot with them. If you get a 170, still most except maybe not Chicago, Columbia and HYS.

Also, if you're from Canada and go to a top school, it will not be hard to get a big law job in the U.S. I know plenty of Canadians that are in big law here.
