Re: GULC (as a transfer) v. Stay at UGA (0 debt)
We need more info here. What type of crim law, at what level, and where? If you want to be an ADA or PD in Georgia, then I say stay. If you're dead set on Main Justice or AUSA in DC, this is a different question.throwaway1222 wrote:What do you guys think? I can graduate for Georgetown with 110k in debt or graduate from UGA with 0 debt. I do not have a desire to work in BigLaw, and am planning on working in criminal law. Obviously GULC opening doors like the DOJ and other government work is appealing to me (some consider this big law?), but not 80 hour work weeks sitting at a desk for big law firms (what I view as big law).
Because my dream is to be involved in criminal law on the government side, I feel like Georgetown's LRAP program makes GT the right move. At the same time though, nothing is a guarantee, and so its risky to assume the 10 year forgiveness and LRAP will apply to me.

The answer is I really don't care. My biggest concern is just getting a job in an area I want to work and having a degree that would allow me to get any job in the future with hard work and having the right connections. I don't care if I have to start off in GA or DC. I want to get a job in criminal and I want to put myself in the best position to obtain a job out of the gate because I know how competitive it is out there. I would imagine that a degree from Georgetown puts me in the best position to get a job, regardless of where it is.

You imagine incorrectly.throwaway1222 wrote:The answer is I really don't care. A degree from Georgetown is great (and worth it) if you want to work as an AUSA. A degree from Georgetown means next-to-nothing if you want to work for the Atlanta DA, which I imagine would definitely favor UGA students.
That's why it's important for you to be specific. I know you don't mind ending up in either DC or Georgia, but you need to make a decision. Staying at UGA means that you'll be staying in Georgia, while Georgetown gives you more flexibility. But mainly, I think that GULC is only worth transferring to if you want to go into federal work.
