Ohio State ($) Vs. Minnesota ($$)

Post by DareDreamer23 » Sat May 21, 2016 2:26 am

I am currently trying to decide between Ohio State University at 15k a year and University of Minnesota at 25k per year. I honestly really like both schools and the programs and classes they offer. I wouldn't mind practicing in either state after graduating also. The cost of living in both places is also relatively the same. I am curious as to what everyone on here would go to, if they were in my shoes!

What are your career goals and final COA's for each?
Just want to clarify--are the amounts listed your scholarships received per year or tuition AFTER scholarship?

Sorry it was the amount of scholarship I received!

The total cost of attendance for Minnesota will be around 35k after the scholarship. The total cost of attendance for Ohio State would be around 40k.

My parents are helping me finance my education by assisting with my rent, food expenses and textbooks for the first year. I would only really be financing tuition through loans.

I am from Florida and went to undergrad there. I have ties to the Midwest region in Iowa. In terms of career goals, I am not sure exactly what area of law I would pursue, but I am leaning towards international law, entertainment law, or health law.

You can pretty much cross off international and entertainment law with both of those schools.

So where would you want to practice? Because both Ohio and Minnesota place regionally.

Ohio is not worth more money unless you want to practice in Ohio.
Do you wish to return to Iowa? Why aren't you considering Iowa Law?

I only have relatives there. My family is from Florida for the most part. I did consider Iowa, but they waitlisted me and I don't think I'll be getting off it.

Is that 35k and 40k a year COA or total?

Ok, then what job opportunities do you see in health law in Ohio or Minnesota? And which one seems better positioned to place their graduates in that field? And what will you do if you don't get health law? Does either school set you up for an alternate career?

You really need to do some of this legwork yourself. If you had, you wouldn't have even asked about whether these two schools would be good for entertainment or international law.

Not sure I would recommend law school at this rate because you don't have any clear career plans. Go work a few years and figure out what you want to do with your life. Law schools will still be an option then.

Totally agree. I don't thing either of these options are compelling enough unless you have a clear idea of what you want to do after law school.

You could also retake the LSAT and maybe end up with way better options! (I know this is the standard TLS advice... But that's because it's usually correct 8) )

Neither. Retake for Iowa with $$ or UF with $$, at least. You don't want to go to law school at a regional school in a state which you have no ties.
