Don't go to SMU if your goal is big law. If that's your goal then UT at a bare minimum, but really you should focus on the T14.

My RC is 180. You need to start thinking outside the box--spending three years in Morningside Heights has closed your mind, my friend.jbagelboy wrote:your RC is 1/5rpupkin wrote:1. Yale

Re: Power-rank the top 5 law schools in Texas and why
1. UT (if you want to work in Texas, particularly biglaw)
2a. SMU (if you want Dallas)
2b. UH (if you want Houston)
4a. Baylor (if you're content doing litigation in a small firm in Waco or surrounding, and being miserable during law school)
4b. Tech (if you don't mind working in West Texas the rest of your life)
4c. St. Mary's (if you want San Antonio)
Don't consider Wesleyan/A&M, Texas Southern, South Texas, UNT. I also don't know where the LSU came from, I haven't met or heard of any attorneys from LSU. I think there are probably a decent number of people from OU who come back to Texas as well, but it'll take more leg work than it would if went to law school in TX.
Depends on what your goals are. Also, like was said above, T14 is probably about on par with UT, particularly if you have ties to Texas.
edit: SMU should only be attended with significant aid/someone else footing the bill. Sticker at SMU is ridiculous and it amazes me that people pay that much.

1. UT - Hard to get into though unless you have top LSAT scores and grades. Austin is great.
2. OU - they have a lot of Texas residents as students and many return to Texas to practice law/intern. Very good law school and Norman/OKC is great to live in. Also very reasonable cost of living. Well worth considering if you want to go to school in/near Texas.
3. SMU - Pricey and very small. Nice school though but Dallas and school is expensive.
4. Baylor - small and you have to live in Waco.
5. Houston

How much scholarship $ would it take to be considered significant aid from SMU in your opinion?p1921 wrote:1. UT (if you want to work in Texas, particularly biglaw)

I don't mean to derail this thread, but out of curiosity, what does Baylor do as a law school(other than crappy employment outcomes) that makes everyone here hate on it?
I never considered TX schools and don't know anything about any of them other than UT. Can someone bring me in on the inside joke that is Baylor Law? TYIA

Re: Power-rank the top 5 law schools in Texas and why
there are entire threads devoted to how shitty Baylor is. unlike some other shit tier law schools, it has a weird cult following that TLS has tried to unpack and obliterate. it also does some uniquely awful things that even other TTTs don't do, and creates a constant cage match environment.Nachoo2019 wrote:I don't mean to derail this thread, but out of curiosity, what does Baylor do as a law school(other than crappy employment outcomes) that makes everyone here hate on it?

basically Baylor both makes its students miserable through its active policies AND fails to deliver outcomes. it would be just a regular level of odious if it had decent employment to compensate for the misery.

Ahh I see. Time to go fish out those threads for some entertainment for my last hour of work! Thanks

Re: Power-rank the top 5 law schools in Texas and why
Assuming your singular goal is a job (any) in Dallas, I think it still has to be very close to a full ride. Just CoL there via loans is nearly $100k (perhaps they overestimate more than most schools?) Considering I think UT is a significantly better school and I wouldn't advise taking on much more than $140ish all day for UT, there's not much room here imo.BeatriceButler wrote:How much scholarship $ would it take to be considered significant aid from SMU in your opinion?p1921 wrote:1. Re: Power-rank the top 5 law schools in Texas and why
1) UT
2) Houston (public school tuition + generous with that in-state tuition waiver, and decent cost of living... but recent downturn in Houston hiring and regional appeal)
3) $MU (expensive as hell, as others have said not recommended without a full-ride or a cash-strapped sugar daddy/family member)
4) Tech (Not as expensive, placed a somewhat impressive 8 in Federal clerkships all things considered, West Texas market cornered and some appeal in DFW)
5) Baylor (expensive and job placement is lacklustre, but Baylor law grads say they were legitimately well prepared for careers in litigation after Practice Court - though they thoroughly hated it)

Thought I had heard the oil prices were taking a toll and some firms were decreasing the number of associates they planned to hire. Could be wrong.BigZuck wrote:There has been a recent downturn in Houston hiring?BigTex wrote:1) UT
