Northwestern vs. NYU for International PI

Post by cavalier1138 » Thu Apr 07, 2016 2:29 pm

This is a bit of a rehash, but a slightly more detailed one based on a new offer and all the information I've been able to gather together.

Northwestern: $105k scholarship. Estimated COA: $145k
NYU: $90k scholarship (contingent on staying in PI work my second summer, otherwise $75k). Estimated COA: $160k

I had a 173 LSAT and a 3.62 GPA. I finished undergrad about 10 years ago, and I have a graduate degree (which is how I managed to get decent scholarships with that GPA).

So I want to do public interest work, specifically focusing on international human rights law. I'm admitted to the JD/LLM in IHR at Northwestern, and I'd have to apply for the LLM at NYU if that's something I wanted to pursue. The main kicker for me seems to be that NYU has a much stronger reputation for PI work and has one of the best LRAPs available. Northwestern is clearly pushing to be stronger in this area, but I'm not sure how much of an impact that will have for me, since I'll be in the first class to really benefit from that focus on PI.

I'm on the verge of depositing at NYU, so I guess I'm mainly looking for validation here.

Bonus note: Assuming I get the JD/LLM program at NYU (and I fully plan on it), it looks like it comes with additional aid. Northwestern doesn't guarantee anything, but one of their admissions officers told me that they generally grant half-tuition during the fourth year.

Nyu seems worth the relatively small COA difference here
