Berkeley vs. NYU
Hi all. I've currently been accepted to NYU and I'm on the waitlist for Berkeley. I really want to practice in California, and COA won't be an issue. Because I want to practice in Cali, if I'm accepted off Berkeley's waitlist, would it be better for me to attend there than NYU?

Easy there, last year Berkeley didn't accept a single person off the waitlist. Do you have any other options? UCLA?

Per http://www.lstscorereports.com/schools/ ... tion/2014/, NYU only places 7.5% of its class in California (vs. 70% in NYC). Of course there is self-selection involved. It's also useful to know your cost of admittance, stats, and other options.SoccerTease wrote:Waitlisted at UCLA as well. I'm extremely lucky and COA won't be an issue for me. UCLA/Berkeley/USC all waitlisted, accepted at NYU, and waitlisted at Columbia. edit: I am wondering how many people from NYU wanted jobs in Cali, and what percentage of them got those jobs

I think the obvious choice if you want to work in California is go to Berkeley if you get off the wait list.

Re: Berkeley vs. NYU
I'm planning on practicing in the Bay Area and strongly considered NYU. If you're in the top 1/2 of your class you're probably not going to have any trouble at all getting to California. NYU is a great school and California firms want more NYU grads. If you're in the bottom half or bottom quarter and also aren't a great interview/don't have relevant experience, it's going to be a bit harder. I'd say you probably still can (talking to NYU students they said the vast majority of students who want to go to CA do), but it's going to take more work than it would from Berkeley or Stanford. Lastly, it's going to be much harder to get to CA if you don't have a compelling story of why you want to come. Firms will want to have some confidence that you really want to be in CA long term and aren't just looking for a nice place to spend the summer.
Oh, and if it counts for anything I'm choosing Berkeley, so I would recommend Boalt over NYU if you end up with the option

My whole family (minus my immediate family) lives in CA, and I spend a few weeks there every year. Does that count as a good reason to come?KiltedKicker wrote:I'm planning on practicing in the Bay Area and strongly considered NYU. I don't know if those are the kind of solid ties to the community and area that firms would be looking for.

Yeah if you don't have anything CA-related on your resume and haven't lived there ties could still pose a problem. Makes going to Berkeley more valuable if you get in.kellyfrost wrote:SoccerTease wrote:Okay, good to know! Thanks!KiltedKicker wrote:Yes, absolutelySoccerTease wrote:

My b. I was basing that off what people had told me. I'm sure it's better than nothing but I guess not as much as some firms might prefer to see.
Go to NYU and do well and it won't matter

Re: Berkeley vs. NYU
Came in to say this. If you end up at NYU I would definitely make sure you spend your 1L summer in CA. If you had grown up in CA I think my answer could be different, but without strong CA ties I would definitely pick Boalt if you get in.Tiago Splitter wrote:Yeah if you don't have anything CA-related on your resume and haven't lived there ties could still pose a problem.
