Am I making a mistake?

Post by LawSchoolDilemma » Sun Apr 03, 2016 4:15 pm

I currently have a 75,000$ scholarship at USC.

Gpa: Low 3
LSAT: Low 160s

URM, decent work experience.

I love USC, SoCal, and I want to work in biglaw out of law school. Tuition is 60,000$ per year, and then living is another 20,000$. Is it feasible to go to law school with that much debt (~165,000 + interest)?

Thank you for your input!

I wouldn't do it, you're looking at 200K debt. Some (lots?) of people would. Do I think that would be a good decision? No. Should you do it? I don't think so. Will you get some people to tell you that you should because you should follow your dreams, screw the elitists, etc.? Probably. Do I think you should retake? Maybe, if the low GPA isn't too much of a hurdle to overcome. Do I think maybe you should give some thought to simply not attending law school if you can't get the career aspirations and cost of attendance to align properly? Yeah.

Have you tried negotiating for a larger scholarship? Have you applied for private scholarships?

Answer here is 100% yes you are making a mistake if you do it. Your COA at USC is going to be about $224k. That's way too expensive for the odds the school gives you of achieving your stated goals.

Suggestion. Change the title so that the question asked there and the question asked in the poll can be answered the same for each person. Without reading the poll, some people might answer the question posed in the title.
