I'll be the *third to ask, why not sit out a year and re-take the LSAT? Seems like an absolute no-brainer in your case. You have a great GPA, and none of those schools are worth those costs

Absolutely do not go to these schools. Do not make a seat deposit. Go to the LSAT forum here, learn all of the strategies, and make it your life goal to maximize your LSAT score. The sky is the limit with your GPA- you can go to Yale, or to a T-14 on a full ride scholarship, all for getting more questions correct on a multiple choice test.

Don't cheat yourself out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Don't cheat yourself out of bettering your career trajectory.

Even getting into the 166-167 range will get you into T14's with $$$.

Don't make a horrible, life-ruining mistake by matriculating at one of these schools and suffering from soul-crushing, non-dischargeable debt and abysmal employment prospects when scoring a few more points on a learnable multiple choice test can dramatically improve your options and permanently alter your career trajectory for the better.

Is there any reason you NEED to be in law school by August?

Seriously, almost anyone on this board will tell you that taking a year off is worth it. Build up some savings, go to Europe or Asia, chill on the beach, do something on your bucket list, and get your LSAT up.

Law school will still be there in 2017.

Elle Woods would definitely have taken the year to hang out on Rodeo Drive or something...last place she'd be is law school. Follow her example and take the year off and get that LSAT up. Then you can be movie Elle and go to Harvard or book Elle and go to Stanford. Or, you can just be you and go somewhere else for free or close to it.

I literally thought the OP was going to tell us she got into HLS and some other T14 with a full ride, and her ex that she's still in love with goes to HLS.

This is completely serious. No one has ever given me this advice before tonight, I just recently discovered this forum as I've been caught up with the application process and also completing undergrad. Thank you.

I'm graduating in May and everyone thinks I'm going to Law School because that's what I've been planning on for a year so the thoughts of changing directions right before graduation scares me a bit. Once again, I REALLY appreciate the advice. I sincerely never thought of it this way before.

I know it's difficult, but seriously do not care one bit about what other people think. They truly do not understand this world. These are the people who think Princeton is a top law school. These are the people who think a JD from any school is a path to riches. These are the people who think the legal profession is what you see on Suits. They have no understanding, and therefore their opinion is irrelevant. You should make the decision that's best for YOU, and right now, that is scoring higher on your LSAT.

I think you all just changed my life. I regret not discovering this sooner.

Good thing you discovered before depositing! I'm glad to see that you are open to this advice; one shouldn't always take advice from internet strangers but the people on here genuinely want to help. With a 160 on your first take (and that stellar GPA) you certainly have what it takes to get 170+ on the LSAT and that will open incredible doors for you. I wouldn't worry about changing plans this late or about what you will tell people who think you are going to law school this coming year. A year later when you are choosing between HYS or a full-ride to a T-14, certainly no one will fault you for waiting (and who cares if they do, this is the best decision for you). I wish you the best of luck; study hard for the LSAT and prosper!

I'm not sure I have the time to devote to June as I'm graduating in May and things will be hectic up until graduation. Also, recommendations for a plan of study? I did TestMasters online this time last year.

If you won't have time to prepare for June, then do October and December.

I totally understand how you feel. Last year, I was you! I was going to law school, everyone knew it, all my friends were. I didn't know what I would do if it wasn't law. People (lawyers) told me it would be better to take a gap year ( but I though, nah, I'm plenty mature!)

I was so wrong, and I'm so glad I took a gap year. I ended up getting a really cool opportunity after graduation , and deferred for a year. I'm more mature, more confident, have thicker skin, have met some awesome people and had some cool experiences. Don't get me wrong, I'm jealous and have FOMO of my friends- but it's not a race. Even if you just volunteer and workout and really introspect on life- that is a good year!

Going to any of those schools at that price almost assures you of being in debt for many years. Why do that when you can get a fullride? I improve my LSAT from diagnostic to taking it (as do many people)- give it a shot. You'll be a more compeitive applicant to those same schools anyway next year with some W/E. (Aka you'll still probably be in)

Suggestions on what to do for a job if/when(lol) I take a gap year? I'm an Economics Major, Communication Minior so I feel confident I could find an entry-level job, but is that smart when I should be focusing on the LSAT? I suppose I could work a minimum wage job and live with my parents in small-town WV and have absolutely no social life, but that also sounds miserable...

you have a damn near perfect gpa. don't retake; don't go to law school. there is no such thing as entertainment law and business law is moving commas 20 hours a day when a deal is about to close.

if you're interested in business, an econ degree will get you closer than a jd from a georgetown ever will.

Good question! I'd ask, what would you do if you didn't go to law school?

This gap year could (potentially) be a year to discover that you DO want to do law (or that you really don't).

Ideas:
1.Paralegal

2.Move to DC and work on the Hill

3.Find a one year fellowship teaching abroad

4.Get some menial job in No.Va or southern Maryland and just commute to DC and have fun in DC with all the newly graduated people (it's a great city for young people)

5. Consulting (with your GPA, Bain, McKinsey, BCG, Deloitte, etc) would all seem to be open to you

I'll admit- none of these options are easier than just committing to law school, right? The path of least resistance is to just deposit. Maybe split the difference. Submit a deposit and apply for jobs. If you get one by May or June, just don't go. If you don't have a job, and have decided you just want to go (which I'd advise against) you'd still have your spot!

Remember, you have a great GPA. If you have some good internship/job experiences, you SHOULD be able to get a decent job, even if you only stay there a year. If you like it, stay! If you don't, it's just a year!
