Post by mommabears » Mon Mar 07, 2016 9:33 am

REVISED (per instructions)

Accepted to BU, BC ND, GW & Minn

COA: BU - $163k, BC - $169K, ND - $161k, GW - $197K, Minn - $163k

Financing COA through loans (still waiting for possible fellowship at ND and needs based financial aid at BU)

LSAT 166 (taken twice) GPA 3.56

Would like to work in big law - corporate/business law. Open to other areas too.....

Open to areas of country to live in as well - went to undergrad out west, from midwest - would prefer midwest/east coast (Virginia to the North).

Yes, answer all the info so we can give you better advice.

But you need to do a little more research about the practice of law first.

Corporate law is almost entirely transactional big law, which will be hard to get from any of these schools.

Also if it is transactional work you don't need a federal clerkship. Finally, a federal clerkship will be harder to get from these schools than big law.

These are all good schools, but more likely to end up with jobs paying $60-70k than prestigious clerkships or big law

What do you mean by corporate law? Transactional work? If you want to do that then why do you want to clerk?

If you want to clerk or work for a big firm then you need to aim higher than these schools. Focus on the T14.

These costs seem pretty high relative to your numbers. Have you negotiated?? Given these costs, I would say none of them are a good idea. BC has respectable big law placement (1/3 I think), but for that price, it is not worth the gamble. Given your goals, you need to shoot for T14. Unfortunately, your gpa will hold you back a bit because you will be below the median gpa at every T14 school. So you need to retake the LSAT and try to get a few more points (168/169), then you should be set for next year at T14 with some money.

Sorry, but you should not go to any of these schools for more than $100k. You have another retake for the LSAT left, I would use it.

Also, where in the midwest do you want to end up and where do you have ties? Your numbers should get you a full ride or close to it at UIUC, IU, and the like. I am surprised Minnesota and ND didn't offer you more. But if you are big law or bust, you definitely need to retake and shoot for t14.

OP are you waiting on your scholarship from ND? If that's what you mean by "fellowship" wait it out, I know of ppl w/similar numbers who got pretty fat scholarships here.

I have not negotiated at all - this are strictly scholarships received w/ acceptance. Yes - still waiting on a few scholarships from a few of the schools. Also need to negotiate. Trying to determine which schools are best to negotiate with. I think BU & ND are most likely to give more money/negotiate?
