Why the hate on Texas Tech
**I know this has been posted, but I was hoping for some additional perspectives**
Curious what people think about why Texas Tech Law is such an afterthought. Looking at the stats, on last year's NALP report and the median Private Practice salary was $70,000 and the median Business salary was $67,000 coming out of graduation. 16.9% of people were unemployed, but I don't know if that's such an awful statistic to completely rule out the school.
Obviously, living in Lubbock for three years is hell. But these stats don't seem all that horrible.
20 graduates in Austin
42 in DFW
11 in Houston
5 in San Antonio
Obviously Big Law is out, but if I'm completely open to a small/mid size firm in one of these cities, Tech should be an option, right? Especially when you're looking at ~45K in total tuition for 3 years.
Please let me know thoughts.

If you want small firms in western Texas, Tech is a fine option. Does anyone really "hate on" Tech? The biggest knock against most schools like that is the amount they charge, but Tech keeps it fairly reasonable.

If you have reasonable career goals informed by the COA and employment prospects then yeah it seems like it could be a good school for you (do you have prior Texas ties?)
The better thing to do is retake the lsat and go to UT though

Dean Perez sprinting to this thread in 3...2...1....
Not clear on how you're looking at $45k tuition total in three years, unless you're pre-assuming a scholarship. And by the way, they'll revoke your scholarship if you finish below median.
My opinion is that coming anywhere near $84k in debt (their average) for a job that's probably going to pay in the $50k-60k range (assuming you're not one of the 25% that doesn't get a full-time job period) is not a good idea. Not as terrible as some of the egregious offenders, but still not a good idea.
I'm sure Dean Perez will disagree. Then again, he's employed by them.

Re: Why the hate on Texas Tech
Just assuming scholarship at the median off the 509 report.
Just out of curiosity - is the NALP report not fairly accurate? From that sheet it sounds like getting a job in the $55k+ range isn't insane. Obviously the public/government jobs are in the sub-50's. But Private Practice/Business jobs all seem to be fairly strong.
Honestly, just trying to gauge the going to Houston for full price vs going to a Tech/OU (similar stats) at a discounted rate.

Only steers and queers come outta Texas Tech, and the average TT law student doesn't look like a steer to me.

I don't understand the question. You probably will get a job in the $55k range (although there's a 25% chance you get no job). If you're intent on getting a small or mid-size firm in an area, go to law school as cheaply as possible in that area. But I wouldn't take on more than about $50k of debt to do it.DepressedWorkerBee wrote:Just assuming scholarship at the median off the 509 report.
