Georgetown v. Cornell

Post by WhiteHouse » Sat Feb 13, 2016 11:34 am

Before you immediately respond with Cornell, I want to give some context.

I grew up in DC; all my family and friends are there. I want to work in DC BigLaw/BigFed in the end. So past proximity and the future proximity are what GULC has going for it.

I haven't heard about scholarships from either yet. I can't retake (3-time taker), and I haven't heard back from UVA yet.

Can someone please put my lingering GULC notion to rest?

1. Cornell has a WAY better Biglaw hiring rate

2. BUT you're more likely to get said biglaw in NY from Cornell

3. Also you're likely to get biglaw in NY than DC no matter where you go

4. If your COA (cost of attending) is significantly lower at GULC vs. Cornell then consider that

5. DC isn't as hard a market to crack (from GULC or anywhere higher) than people seem to suggest - but it is by NO MEANS guaranteed. The range of grades that are accepted to DC Biglaw (say, V100) are the same spread as in NY, but there are just fewer spots. I know people here at GULC who were roughly median and got V100 firm offers here. But again look at the numbers - biglaw is a coinflip proposition from GULC which is risky.

6. Consider your back-up plan if you don't get DC Biglaw from OCI - are you targeting other markets? Do you have some other job/career path in mind and would NY or DC serve that goal better?

what shows up on average aid on mylsn? gtown will likely be more expensive to attend, in addition to being less likely to lead to biglaw (gtown does place more graduates straight into gov though)

also worth considering that biglaw for a couple years -> gov might be a more attainable goal than going directly to big fed. even at gtown it's like ~15% going into government in any capacity, compared with ~70-80% going to fed clerk/biglaw at cornell

I doubt that coming from NY would make BigFed hard for you. So, if you can live with school in upstate NY and working in BigLaw in NY for a couple of years before you pivot back to DC, I think Cornell will probably end up making the most sense as long as it is cheaper than Georgetown, which given Cornell's history of generosity, should be a good possibility.
