Seattle University?

Post by eastwest » Sat Jan 30, 2016 12:39 am

I'm trying to decide where to go next year, and am leaning towards Seattle U. I got a $15,000 a year scholarship, but will need to take out loans for the rest of tuition and living expenses. They seem to have a solid externship program and the #1 Legal Writing program, but they're not ranked that high and with only so so employment statistics. But, I do really want to practice in Alaska, and they're the only school with a satellite campus there.

Is taking out loans to go too big of a gamble? Would another school be better if I want to practice in Alaska? I also got a decent scholarship to West Virginia and nearly full tuition at Savannah, would moving up to Alaska after I get my degree somewhere else be a better idea?

The externship might help if you're externing in Alaska. Ignore the Number One Legal Writing Program thing, that's totally irrelevant and probably not even true (I'm sure it's true in the sense that they somehow convinced people to rank them number 1, but not that they actually are the best. And even if they were the best that won't help you get a job or anything)

I think generally people would say that that school isn't worth it for that price. Most schools aren't worth it for that price. Wanting to work in Alaska, my gut says UW is probably your best bet. I know Duke has an Alaska law journal but not sure how many grads work up there. I would do some more networking with Alaska attorneys (ideally young ones) and see what they say.
