I'm interested in islamic jurisprudence. It's very important to me to be able to have this focus. I plan to work in muslim majority countries after school. I'm not interested in corporate or business law and definitely don't want to work in the states. Which school would have better prospects.I'm most interested in having a chance to study islamic law and to be able to write about it in a law journal. I want the school that can give me the opportunity to focus on islamic law.
I live in Los Angeles so it's easier to go to ucla but Georgetown has been emailing and calling me to go there. I haven't gotten the same level of enthusiasm from ucla. But then again UCLA has an islamic law focus and a journal of near eastern law that fits perfectly with my goals. But D.C. would be a better place to make connections to actually be able to do this work after school. so confused!

Yeah don't go to GULC (or any school) based on the perceived excitement of the recruitment people.

But seriously maybe go to school in the country you want to practice. Given that, y'know, laws and entire legal systems are different in every country...

It seems like quite a waste of cash to attend a JD when you would likely have to complete a similar qualification at whatever country it is you choose to live in after graduation. The only reason worth pursuing a costly JD in the states is so you can practice US law. In addition, even if you go to a school with a focus on Islamic Law courses, you will only be able to prove to employers your interest, I imagine it would not be considered sufficient for employment.

Correct me if I'm wrong of course, you may have very well researched the possibility and found that it's attainable - this has just been the fruits of my research when I looked at pursuing employment in France. You been offered $$ at either?

No. Don't waste you money on a JD. The depth that these schools are going to offer probably stops at a class on Islamic finance and some general international law junk. The reason is simply: you don't get a JD (effectively a degree in American law with some exposure to international law) to practice local law in Syria--especially as there might not be any at this point.

Most Muslim countries don't really have "islamic law", the only field i can see it being used would be finance related. Unless you're talking about sharia law in places like saudi arabia, in which case a JD is pretty useless.

You have to be more specific. Turkey, the UAE and Iran are all Islamic-majority countries. They are nothing like each other. However you probably would be best served by not going to law school in America unless the you're positive the country you intend to work in will accept an American JD or LLB. I think you might be able to pull off using an American degree in a more secular country like Turkey or the UAE or Kuwait, but that's beyond my knowledge.

Like, religious jurisprudence? I would think that that any disputes handled by religious law, even in Muslim countries, would be handled by clerics, not civil lawyers.

Why would an American JD be helpful here?
