PI interest in Boston, minimal debt vs. Prestige
Hi TLS
I am senior at UG who hopes to practice PI for the government in Boston.
I have no desire to practice Big Law. I have not taken the LSAT, but have a current gpa of 3.49 and plan to bring it up to a solid 3.5+ by the end of the year.
The absence of an LSAT score aside, humor me for a moment: would going to a school like Suffolk or Northeastern with minimal to no debt ( my family lives in Boston ) and clear career goals plus a decent net work ( neighbor is assistant district attorney, friend of mothers was an assistant district attorney ) be entertainable, vs. going to BC/BU for sticker? Or is it still fool hardy.*
Many thanks
* previously fool hearty, ( shakes head ), thank you kickflip

I think it's "Foolhardy," and theres no reason for these to end up as your only options. Just kill the LSAT and come back asking if BC/BU for near free is a good choice.

Follow up: do you think attending say Suffolk or Northeastern materially hurt my chances to land government PI ?180kickflip wrote:I think it's "Foolhardy," and theres no reason for these to end up as your only options. Just kill the LSAT and come back asking if BC/BU for near free is a good choice.

The prestige vs. money question is between a T14 and a T1 on a full ride, not a proxy for a material aversion to studying for the LSAT. TCR is go to BU/BC for free. Living with your family in Boston is a great idea.

Hi Twenty. Thanks for your response. I really enjoyed reading your " so you want PI" post. I have no aversion to studying for the LSAT, just general insecurity that I will not be able to perform as well as I would like. As a result I am trying to gauge if my aspirations are still attainable from less prestigious schools such as Suffolk and Northeastern.twenty wrote:The prestige vs. money question is between a T14 and a T1 on a full ride, not a proxy for a material aversion to studying for the LSAT. I recall that in your post you said that prestige of school for PI government is not as important as "hustle." Is this sentiment applicable here?
Thanks

Sorry, I wasn't trying to insinuate that you're taking an easy-out, just that the LSAT, while not fun, is definitely necessary. Keep at it.Gelato1 wrote:Hi Twenty. Thanks for your response. The sentiment is applicable, definitely, but you have to keep in mind that you'll have bigger concerns at Suffolk and Northeastern. Namely, scholarship stipulations and serious grade deflation.

This is what you should be aiming for:
https://www.bu.edu/law/prospective/fina ... _interest/
https://www.bc.edu/schools/law/admissio ... cholarship
Don't settle for anything less. A good LSAT score, with that GPA, and a demonstrated interest in PI should be enough.

I had this same question. I've been accepted into BC, BU, and NUSL and am trying to decide between them. I'm definitely interested in Public Interest and have received the PILS at NUSL. Still waiting to hear back about scholarships from BC and BU, but it's hard to anticipate I'd get full scholarships there.
Northeastern (full scholarship) vs BC/BU ($) .... any advice??

If 100% dedicated to PI, northeastern for free (col only) is way way better than BU with like 150k debt or whatever

That was for the OP. I have already taken the LSAT and have been accepted into all three schools.
