Memphis Area
I'm from Memphis and I would like to live in Memphis after law school. Would that mean that U of M Cecil C. Humphrey's school of law is the best bet to get a decent legal job in the area since it has more exposure to that area(Being the only law school in Memphis)? Or would there be a better idea? I received a 155 on the LSAT and was wondering if anyone could add anything?

You need to retake the LSAT first. How did you prepare for it?JimLaw91 wrote:I'm from Memphis and I would like to live in Memphis after law school. Would that mean that U of M Cecil C. What kind of law do you want to practice?
Memphis might be ok on a full ride. Same with UTK and Ole Miss. All three only give you a 50-55% chance of full time legal employment so you need to go on a full ride or close to it. Vandy would be the best non-t14, but you need to study a lot more for the LSAT.

The best schools to practice in Memphis are Yale, Harvard, and Stanford--but that doesn't mean don't go to Memphis, however. Before we can determine what your best option is, we need a lot more info. What is your LSAC GPA? Have you taken the LSAT more than once? How long did you study for it? What are your plans in Memphis? Big law? Mid or small? What are your financial options?JimLaw91 wrote:I'm from Memphis and I would like to live in Memphis after law school. Would that mean that U of M Cecil C. Regardless of what you say your GPA is, I recommend retaking so you can at least get a bigger scholly. I'm sure whatever Memphis is offering in terms of scholarships, it's not enough with a 155, regardless of what your GPA is. Maybe if you get a really good LSAT you can go to Vandy (I'm assuming you're not in the range for Harvard or Yale, but correct me if I'm wrong). Even though Vanderbilt isn't in Memphis, with how much more prestigious it is for law firms, I'm sure the best firms would be looking at Vandy first, before Memphis, but it--again--depends on your finances and what kind of scholarships are available. A full-ride at Memphis may be better than full CoA at Vandy if you want to live in Memphis.

Re: Memphis Area
I am a practicing lawyer in Memphis (but didn't go to Univ. of Memphis). They are pretty stingy with scholarship $ is what I have heard. Even someone with a 4.0 and 164+ may not necessarily get a full ride, which is obviously absurd and you should go with a different option.
The Memphis market is pretty small and even the larger firms are not all that big (and therefore do not hire many associates). You pretty much will need to be top 5-10% in your class for a good firm. If you snag something else, it will be pure hustle/luck.
If you only have a 155 and want to practice in Memphis, U of M will really be your only option, but the market is too small & congested, and it will be too expensive. You should retake. If you can get Vandy on a big scholarship, go there. If you do not get enough there, then maybe U of M makes sense after a retake.
