Re: NYU v. Columbia
follow the money
oci success rate is great at both schools. 88% at nyu btw (and that excludes other channels like mass mail, networking, referral, etc)
so i'd take the 25k
btw, did you factor in loan fees/interest/deferment?

Columbia with such a price gap. NYU maybe if the price difference was 75 or more.

$25k is basically an extra year of loan repayment for nearly zero additional benefit. I'd take NYU.

It seems as if OP's parents are pretty rich since they're paying for so much of the COA. Its only 25k, I say go to Columbia if thats where youll be happier.

I just can't help but ask. If all of you believe C and N are the same and C isn't worth a penny more why in the world would N give you more money just because you got into C? Maybe they don't think they are the same? Just wondering. Call N them and straighten them out. They should be offering their equal product at an equal price.

Didn't you also tell someone to take Harvard at sticker over a Darrow? Stop giving advice.michlaw wrote:Columbia with such a price gap. NYU maybe if the price difference was 75 or more.

Tbh, Darrow over sticker at Harvard could be more justifiable depending on one's goals, but taking 70k more in loans for Columbia over NYU is actually retarded.WheninLaw wrote:Didn't you also tell someone to take Harvard at sticker over a Darrow? That's not an answer. And many at HYS (including my best friend) turned down full rides and are doing just swell thank you very much. In your world the most qualified students according to the entrance numbers would only go the best school that gave them a full ride. That is not what happens and it never will. Half the students at N pay full boat and are happy to do so. I guess you think them all fools? The self proclaimed debt vigilantes are monotonous.

What a bad strawman.michlaw wrote:That's not an answer. And many at HYS (including my best friend) turned down full rides and are doing just swell thank you very much. The problem is that 0L's tend to underestimate the impact of debt and overestimate the impact of school prestige. The fact that you know people at HYS that are "doing swell" doesn't mean their decision to incur an additional $200,00 of debt is a good idea.
I don't necessarily think people that pay full freight at NU are fools. Sometimes an enormous extra cost can be worth it. But usually, it's not. There's a reason why people like you often say things like "It's Harvard" - because you don't really have much else to add. The "debt vigilantes" are focused on outcomes and cost, and I don't think that's a bad thing.

ITT lay prestige of C over N is set at $25k.

Re: NYU v. Columbia
Well, NYU probably gave him a scholarship during the cycle. Columbia could be running low or out of money. Could also be that Columbia will match NYU. This is a bad argument.michlaw wrote:I just can't help but ask. Both schools place exceptionally well in NYC biglaw. Why pay a penny more than you have to for what is likely to be the exact same outcome?

Re: NYU v. Columbia
Well Paul Cravath is a CLS alum so that's a tie breaker right there.NoBladesNoBows wrote:True; I guess that we're back to inconclusive. Fun fact: I was actually going to use Cravath first but they have the same number of partners from NYU and CLS. Not that number of partners is really an accurate judge of anything (first post was sarcastic), but I still thought that it was interesting.jbagelboy wrote:Then again Wachtell was founded by a bunch of NYU alumsNoBladesNoBows wrote:Twenty partners at WLRK are CLS while only thirteen are NYU, so clearly CLS is TCR. hth
