I think ND, Michigan, and GULC are out. I would be deciding between UVA and Vandy. I think that's a little much for UVA, and I would personally take Vandy. FL biglaw seems to be pretty difficult to get though.. Tough call.

It is my understanding that students who do reasonably well at ND are able to return to their home markets pretty easily. Check out their website to see the spread of where graduates end up. It is not overwhelmingly concentrated in the Midwest.

167k at UVA is not bad, imo. Michigan and GULC are out, because UVA is a better choice in every way.

If you want to keep debt low, I'd try to leverage more scholly out of Vandy. I'd take 167k debt at UVA over 92k debt at ND any day.

Just curious, how did you arrive at $167k for UVA? I've been using GULC's calculator and I'm sitting at $191k with just tuition at repayment.

I'm 3.5X/171 and I got 60k at UMich. You should definitely try and get them to play ball even if it's only for leverage. I'm in a similar boat, decision wise, and I think I might be leaning towards UVA.

At that cost, UVA seems like your best bet. That degree is going to be more portable than Vandy or ND, and the extra money is worth it IMO.

User1855 wrote:Are you in- our out-of-state? UVA's in-state tuition is $3K lower for 1L but then goes even lower for 2L and 3L ($5K less than OOS).

For 2014-15, these in-state numbers were 51,800 for 1L and 49,800 for 2L and 3L. I included 1,800 for books/supplies and assumed 3.5% increase each year and got the ~$168K total. PM me for details.
I'm in-state as well. I didn't realize that tuition goes down for 2L and 3L. I guess I'll take some time to re-calculate my numbers, $23k is a lot of money.
User1855 wrote:I'm waiting on GULC before I send anything to Michigan. What's making you lean towards UVA?
I don't really have any good reasons. The family's pushing UVA for the preftige (they're footing COL, so their opinion matters) and it's hard to argue with job numbers. I honestly prefer city life and don't like the fratty culture at UVA. I'm just waiting on my GULC offer so I can start doing some serious negotiating.

Edit: OK, so I re-ran the numbers using that spreadsheet in the sticky and I think I understand where the majority of the difference comes from now. Total loans would be: ~$155k, but the total $$ at repayment (6 months from graduation) would be $183k. I'm not sure if you considered the interest that you're accruing during school.

I guess I just thought Vandy would be (considerably) stronger in Florida. I'm sure it's possible to get back to Florida from ND, but it just seems like it would be easier with Vanderbilt.
