Three thoughts.

first, Michigan's employment stats are going to be a lot better for the class of 2016 and thereafter because of several adjustments to class size, grade curve etc.

second, $15k is not a small amount of money, nor is it an especially large amount of money. I think it's got to be about where you think you'll be happier.

third, Michigan has been a terrific place to go to law school.

I think you should have much better options than this, any reason you might have underperformed this cycle?

What did you get at Cornell, Duke, and Northwestern?

25K scholarship for a 3.7/171 is an easy choice?

Something went wrong here if the OP was staring down the barrel of sticker debt at Cornell/Duke. The OP didn't even get a fully at WUSTL!

I think I'd try to correct what went wrong before blissfully signing up for 200K debt at a school like UVA.

Yeah I'm confused about how little you got at WUSTL considering we have the same GPA and you have a higher LSAT. Do you have a CF problem?

you've been following the scholarship shifts cycle over cycle more closely than I have. Maybe $25K/year at UVA is no longer a solid result for those numbers (it used to be). Either way, OP, if you're k-jd then I'd agree with Zuck, take a little time and apply again. Between these four, though, UVA.

I also don't see how UVA with $75K will quite reach $200K in debt. The yearly cost of attendance will be $70-75K, depending on how large a studio/1BDR you want, whether you drive, ect. You'll borrow $45-50K in year one, $50-52K in year two, and $35-40K in year three. Back of the envelope interest calculation, you're looking at $160-170K at graduation.

I don't know what happened at WUSTL, it seems like you got robbed a bit by that offer. Maybe try negotiating? The worst they can say is no. Although given the outcomes you have received and your goals it's probably UVA. For whoever said Ann Arbor is a great place to go to law school: it is, but Charlottesville is pretty awesome as well and doesn't have the cold and snowy winters.

Our cycle I got 20K a year at UVA off the wait list and I wasnt even smart enough to crack a 170, let alone a 171. Same GPA.

Cornell has been making it rain from what I understand. I would think those numbers would get huge scholarships there and at Northwestern. WUSTL fully is automatic and the OP only got 30K. It's weird, but maybe it's applying late, some form of yield protect, or maybe I'm more out of touch than I think.

LST has UVA sticker for non-residents at 285K. I think a 75K scholarship will leave someone closer to 200K debt than 170K debt but I'll happily agree to disagree

3.7/170 applying this cycle, and I got 120k at Cornell, though OP got a little bit more than me out of Michigan. So who knows.

ETA: also zero from Duke?? Damn. I'm also sort of wondering if OP had an app problem beyond just applying late--doesn't it seem a little extreme to not get anything?

Show Cornell your Michigan and UVa offers. See if they offer more.

TBH, I like Cornell over UVa for its employment numbers. If your down for NYC biglaw, Cornell is a beast. But you must pay for that by living in Ithaca

The simple estimate calculation will be as follow:

COA $ 75K per year.
COA for 3 year = $ 225 K
After 3 years the loan became $ 285K.

$ 285K divided by $ 225 K = 1.27

If you borrower $ 150K
After 3 years the loan became $ 150K multiple by 1.27 = $ 190,500.

If you borrower $ 140K
After 3 years the loan became 140K multiple by 1.27 = $ 177,800.

I mean, I'm too lazy to punch the numbers myself, that's why the sticky at the top of the choosing forum asks posters to do the calculations themselves and present it to the hive. It's actually a good exercise, I think people should know how much all this crap costs. The OP said it would be nuts that he/she would be taking on 6 figure debt. Not sure he/she knew it would actually be closer to 200K than 100K.

60-90K scholarships sound great but they still lead to DAT BIG DEBT cuz of the bloodsuckers who run such PRESTIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING

UVA at that price isn't a bad option but it's not as great of an outcome as you'd hope to get with those numbers.

Especially if you're a KJD, I think taking some time off to work, retake, and save up some money to mitigate COA loans would be a very good idea here.

Talking about scholarships instead of COA and applying "very late" are both bad signs.

Figure out the weaknesses in your applications and reapply next cycle. Getting your numbers was an accomplishment but you're underperforming this cycle.

Wow, even with $15,000 extra from Michigan, most people have voted for UVA? I thought they were peer schools, along with Penn and Duke. Surprising.
Might be the DC thing. UVA also has better raw numbers recently, which is probably what people are also focusing on.

^Duke? If you include duke you gotta include Cornell, Northwestern GULC.

Take UVA, cigarettes are way cheaper there too.
