Re: USNWR 2016 Law School Rankings
Just edited this old Wikipedia paragraph. I didn't want any employers confusing Michigan for a T10.Wikipedia wrote:Michigan Law School consistently ranks among the highest-rated law schools in the United States. It was ranked third in the initial U.S. News & World Report law school rankings in 1987, and is one of seven schools never to appear outside the magazine's top 10. Michigan Law is also one of the "T14" law schools, schools that have consistently ranked within the top 14 law schools since U.S. News began publishing rankings. In the 2015 U.S. News ranking, Michigan Law is ranked 10th overall, tied with Duke.[4]The 2010 Super Lawyers rankings placed Michigan as second.[5] Michigan Law is currently ranked 6th for International Law.[6] In a 2011 U.S. News "reputational ranking" of law schools by hiring partners at the nation’s top law firms, the University of Michigan Law School ranked 4th.[7]

Re: 2016 USNWR Law School Rankings (Top 100 in OP)
Irvine's ranking is right about where most people expected. I thought they would be #20-30. Their ranking at #30 is probably half-arbitrary, meaning they could have easily been placed at 25 or better, but were placed at #30 so that they would have to work their way up...earn it.
Reputation ratings should be transparent, so we can see who rates the schools and how. They are at least top-25 on hard factors.

Are they really though? Who in the current top 25 do they deserve to knock off? I guess Minnesota or Alabama but no one can figure out why those schools are ranked as highly as they are and yet there they stay on a yearly basis. UCI's unemployment rate is staggering and I'm not sure how sustainable that insane federal clerkship rate is once Chemerinsky runs out of favors to call in.PDaddy wrote:Irvine's ranking is right about where most people expected. Re: 2016 USNWR Law School Rankings (Top 100 in OP)
You make several good points. UCI's employment ratings and continued ascension up the reputation ladder are the keys to its success. I doubt that it will ever go beyond top 18-20 or so in its best years. Still, I'm slightly surprised that it wasn't ranked a little higher. They really put in a lot of work and expected to start higher; this we know.pamphleteer wrote:Are they really though? Who in the current top 25 do they deserve to knock off? Re: 2016 USNWR Law School Rankings (Top 100 in OP)
No. UCI was "placed" in the same way as all the other schools: through a largely arbitrary collection of of ratings, scores, and other numeric criteria. Yes, UCI could have easily been #25. It also could have easily been #35 or #45. Folks at USNWR are not pulling strings to make UCI "earn" its ranking. Jesus.PDaddy wrote:Irvine's ranking is right about where most people expected. I don't understand LSU dropping 22 spots. They have solid employment numbers, better than Tulane's even (In the scope of T2 ranked schools).

This is extremely helpful since I'm still deciding where to go school this fall. Iowa's the real deal, huh? What an impressive ranking. I'm disappointed that my top choice (IUB) has fallen off the map and Wake Forest is just a disaster according to these rankings.

I'm honestly curious as to how this keeps happening. I'm guessing it's mainly on the strength of UMN's reputational score but why is its reputation so good? It isn't attached to a prestigious undergrad and it doesn't place its graduates into particularly prestigious positions. Is it mostly just the faculty?minnbills wrote:Just happy UMN managed to stay in the top 20

Well, it's mostly reputation of the school itself. It's definitely not job placement.pamphleteer wrote:I'm honestly curious as to how this keeps happening. UMN undergrad is actually one of the top public schools in the country, and it's getting better every year, so that's not an issue. The faculty is also pretty stellar (as far as credentials and rep are concerned, anyways).

UMN is an amazing public. Its health programs are some of the best in the country and its UG has a really solid reputation.

Re: 2016 USNWR Law School Rankings (Top 100 in OP)
Many of the schools that send me daily law school spam mail offers did not appear to move up in the rankings.
i don't understand why
According to their emails they are the top in this, that or the other thing.
