How many times have you taken the LSAT? Cop the bibles, put in 3 months of PTs, retake and get a 170+, and hit the T14.

Sounds like you're capable and smart enough to get a couple more points. Consider retaking in June. If you do better, you can try to negotiate for more money or decide if you want to sit out a year and shoot for a better school.

I know retaking the LSAT sucks, but you're looking at potentially tens of thousands of dollars in more money just for taking a test. That's absolutely worth it.

What kind of defense attorney? There's a huge difference between being the guy/gal with your face on bus benches pleading out DUIs and being a federal public defender or white collar defense at biglaw firm.

This article has tips on how to break into white collar defense. None of the routes he mentions are easy, and the first three are still difficult but more realistic coming out of a T-14. If that's the type of criminal defense you were thinking of, retaking and sitting out the cycle is definitely the way to go.

If you're fine doing "regular" criminal defense work at a smaller firm, retaking is still credited because for the bump in scholly money, but you could get by enrolling at whichever school you liked most.

If you're practice tests are in the 168-170 range, and you're highest score is 164 you MUST retake. You've got a very real shot of completely changing your opportunities and debt load.

You can still get more money out of them in the summer. If you pull down a 168-170, you can tell Vanderbilt or whoever that you need more money or you'll be putting off a year.

If they don't play ball, be willing to take a year off and have literally life changing employment and debt outcomes. As someone who went straight through, I sincerely regret not taking a year to work, travel, etc. I wish I could have a do over and retake one more time and take time off.

Don't cancel your backpacking trip. Take the fall LSAT and if you improve your score, reapply next year.
