I know, this one seems like a no-brainer. All my friends and family seem to think so. But I have several reasons for considering choosing NYU over Yale, so hear me out. 1) I'm 95% set on public interest international law 2) NYU's international law program is much better than Yale's 3) NYC is obviously the best place to be for international law 4) I applied for the Root-Tilden-Kern and IILJ scholarships at NYU and 5) I'm not interested in academia.

However, Yale has the best overall law program, the no grades system is awesome, the student body is incredibly smart and supportive, the faculty is super accessible, and the connections I gain there could open doors that NYU can't.

Many of you will probably ask me to come back after I've heard back about the scholarships, but that's not practical. The RTK interview is at the end of March, and if I get it, I will have three days to decide. I don't want to wait until then to ask y'all for help, so please consider two scenarios: 1) RTK/full ride at NYU and 2) no RTK.

Some relevant information: I will not be receiving financial aid from either institution. Neither will I be taking out loans -- my parents are covering my tuition. I've also gotten in to Michigan ($90k) and UChicago (haven't received scholarship information), but I don't want to go to either, unless one of you can convince me otherwise.

I think maybe if you got an RTK that'd be reason to choose NYU, but I don't think "better international law program" is really a valid reason to not go to Yale.

Yale is the gift that keeps giving.

RTK is brand name credibility too, but you're still striving with the plebes for grades and opportunities.

With Yale (I imagine) there's a relief in knowing you are never in danger of abject failure. As one dean used to say to new admits "my friends, you are off the treadmill now".

Except that she'll never use LRAP because her parents are covering cost.

OP, the only way you should choose RTK or NYU is if you have significant personal reasons for being in NYC. If not, go to Yale.

nyu's clinics are supposedly the best. i dunno about international law, though. yalies are afforded pretty unique international opportunities from wut i can tell.

I'd go with Yale. Yale has the Lowenstein Clinic. I believe you can participate second semester of 1L year. There are fellowships available for after graduation. Even without your parents paying, I'd pick Yale over RTK. The grading system really leaves you free to devote your time to what interests you.

For those of you saying I'm crazy for not picking Yale...reasons? Sources?

Because I just spoke to a current Yale 3L who told me that Yale's international law program is not comparable to NYU's. She said that the international law faculty at Yale is focused on national security. That's not what I want to do.

Yes, I know that there are international law/human rights clinics and journals, but NYU has many more.

And maybe I should have included this piece of information: the money is coming from my parents, but it's in my name. So if I went to NYU with an RTK, I'd graduate with around $300k in the bank. If I went to Yale, there'd be $0.

I'm only defending NYU because you guys seem to be on board with Yale. To be honest, I'm really split 50-50.

But you can do Yale and keep your 300k.

Step 1: Go to yale
Step 2: Do PI for 10 Years
Step 3: Use Yale LRAP welfare
Step 4: Cash out debt with PSLF
Step 5: 300k profit. (just arrange custody and control of your 300k in such a way that it's not technically yours but still accessible to you).

Not possible. It's an education fund in my name. Nobody can touch it. Hell, I can't even access it for things other than education until I'm 25.

Seriously though, that makes a huge difference. Based on what you've said willing to bet the international law education from NYU is better. But International law is pretty squishy so that doesn't matter. Clinics are overrated. Yale is Yale and you can make your own in roads into the international law community. The money matters though -- you'll be able to take a job paying peanuts for a few years and still live comfortably or jump at a risky opportunity that other people couldn't. I'd go to NYU.

If no full-ride at NYU, sure, Yale. But if you get the scholarship, NYU all the way. Spending $300k you'd otherwise get to keep just for the Yale name is what's cray. If you can't succeed coming out of NYU in those circumstances I really doubt Yale is going to make the crucial difference.

60-40 split in favor of which?

Right now I'm 60-40 in favor of Yale, with no final word on RTK yet. But with the RTK, I'd be 50-50.

RTK and 300K in your pocket is a pretty good deal. I'd probably take RTK.

You have less of a chance of being a SCOTUS clerk, but plenty of RTKs have awesome careers still.
