UF or take a year off
Hi I applied this cycle and had an in at Cornell and UF with scholly. I chose UF and dropped cornell, but now I’m debating taking a year off, retaking the lsat and reapplying. I want to work in Cali, and I feel as if UF won’t provide me that opportunity, and transferring will be too hard.
I already took a year off, so now it would be the second year off.
Stats: 3.6, 162, Mexican.
Goal: Biglaw/midsize California
What should I do?

UF, as in Florida? You won't be going to California from Florida. I'm a student at UF, love it, think it's great (read: not awful) if you want to work in Florida...but it's not going to provide you with any meaningful BigLaw opportunities (I mean, top of the class gets ATL or Miami/Tampa BigLaw, but that's it), and it sure as fuck won't get you to Cali.applyinglate wrote:Hi I applied this cycle and had an in at Cornell and UF with scholly. What do you think are the odds of UF->UCLA transfer?Geaux12 wrote:UF, as in Florida? You won't be going to California from Florida. No problem. Please feel free to ask questions in here/PM. If you want Cali, gun for Boalt. Buenas suerte.applyinglate wrote:UF as in University of Florida.Geaux12 wrote:UF, as in Florida? I think that going to a law school planning to transfer is an awful idea, because you don't have any clue how you'll perform. You have the opportunity to choose the law school that's right for you BEFORE committing to one that's obviously not. Don't let impatience keep you from retaking and going to a school that can actually help you reach your goals.applyinglate wrote:What do you think are the odds of UF->UCLA transfer?Geaux12 wrote:UF, as in Florida? That's on point. Thank you so much Geaux... This really helped. I guess it just sucks to take another year off.Geaux12 wrote:I think that going to a law school planning to transfer is an awful idea, because you don't have any clue how you'll perform. You know what sucks? Being stuck in a state you don't want to be in. Get a job in a law office so you can make sure that the law is ACTUALLY what you want to do, study for the LSAT. Get that score up, go to Boalt or UCLA/USC.

Re: UF or take a year off
As Geaux said, never attend a law school thinking you'll be able to transfer out. There's no way to predict where you'll rank in your class after 1L. Assume median, which will not get you UCLA. (And in this scenario, even if you win, you lose, because you'll be attending UCLA at sticker.)applyinglate wrote:What do you think are the odds of UF->UCLA transfer?Geaux12 wrote:UF, as in Florida? I did it at 27 and plenty of people have done it while even older. Worked out just fine for us. One extra year is never going to make a difference regardless of how old you are. Besides, it sounds like you're still in your early-mid 20's so you have nothing to worry about.applyinglate wrote:How old is too old to take a year off?

Your only choices are wait + retake, change your goals (both location and downgrading from big law), or not going to law school at all. Might not be ideal but these are your only real options.applyinglate wrote:25... so starting at 26... I have friends who went and are 21....

Yeah, not really wanting to change locations. I would be ok with midsize but low debt.Chrstgtr wrote:Your only choices are wait + retake, change your goals (both location and downgrading from big law), or not going to law school at all. Not enough time, right? Should I apply first day, and take December?

I have two friends who went K-JD and one who took a year off. All three are massively in debt. One is still jobless after taking USC at sticker. One is currently unemployed and has 80k of debt at a CA TTT. The other is a 3L at a CA TTT (paying sticker).applyinglate wrote:25... so starting at 26... I have friends who went and are 21....
I'd rather be the 25/26 year old guy who went to a good school or decent school for free.

Re: UF or take a year off
OP,
I'm taking the LSAT in Decemeber. I'll be 26 when I start, and graduate at 29. I have experience in the pratice that I'd like to pursue (Securities/Corporate law). However, as the above poster stated, the debt load is HUGE. I won't go unless I get into the T-14+Vanderbilt, or Wake Forest/Chapel Hill full ride
I'm from NC

Re: UF or take a year off
Serious questions: Would me going to UF for basically free be a waste of my URM boost?
Is it really worth it to retake?
I would probably have to hustle to go to California after, but is it worth it?
