JAG producing schools

Post by Mountaineer160 » Tue Jun 24, 2014 5:16 pm

Does anyone know if any schools have a reputation for producing JAGs, if so any specific branches for that school?

Go read (not post in, mind) the military thread in the law student forum. In short, the most important thing for JAG is, in order:

demonstrated commitment/hustle > prior service >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> grades >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> school name/prestige.

If you really want JAG, go to the highest ranked school that gives you a full ride + no stipulations.

I appreciate your guidance on what JAG looks for in an applicant, but that was not the question. The question was which schools produce more JAGs than others, and have a reputation for doing so. I would like to be surrounded by like minded individuals who are seeking the same goal that I am, which is JAG. I would like this because that would produce a support system for all the individuals interested in JAG at that school. Not to mention that to a certain degree I may enjoy going through the law school experience more with those kinds of individual than those who are not interested in JAG. In addition, there would be more 2Ls and 3Ls at such a school who have already started the process( in the case of USMC already have their commission) who can offer more first hand insight ( as opposed to insight found on the internet).

Thanks for responding though.

I don't know that any schools are going to have a critical mass of JAG aspirants, or a reputation for producing a lot of JAGs. One exception might be William and Mary...a disproportionate number of Army JAGs seem to go there.

Almost every school has a veterans group, if you just want to have people to hang out with who have had similar experiences.

He gave you solid advice. There aren't schools that pump out JAG because it is extremely difficult to obtain these jobs, and a good percentage of applicants that would be selected cannot pass the physical, and testing. His advice on best school you can get for cheap or free was good advice.

This. JAG hires less than 10% of applicants for a host of different reasons, so there is no demonstrated rhyme or reason to their selection beyond what twenty outlined above. No school will give you a demonstrable leg up in getting JAG over any other, which is pretty rare for the legal hiring market.

Go for cheap, hustle and show continued interest in JAG throughout law school, and be ready to grind because it may take several application cycles to bust through.

You don't think having this guy on staff is at least a little helpful?

I'm not a JAG, but I have been in the military and one thing I've noticed about the JAG community is that there is no discernible pattern to the schools people attended. I've met JAGs from HYS and I've met JAGs who went to TTTTs like Regent. There's no school that gives you some kind of secret "in".

William and Mary and Texas Tech I would say produce the most JAGs, but this is misleading.

W&M produced a lot of FLEP applicants, who are already commissioned officers and have their law school paid for by the service. Upon completion their guranteed a spot in JAG. Because of this they pad a schools employment numbers, so to speak, and I think W&M takes that into account. Texas Tech meanwhile just seems to have more retired JAG officers on staff then most other schools. For this reason students have more information about the JAG corp and are simply encouraged to apply more. In them end the only "guranteed" route to JAG is to simply join the military as an officer and apply for FLEP, which is slightly less competitive then the normal JAG route, but is still very selective.
