Hypothetical

Post by batman77 » Sun Jun 15, 2014 10:50 pm

This is for the upcoming cycle. I'm retaking in September and hopefully won't have to consider any of these options but in case I don't improve I'd like to know what you guys think.

Info: 162/3.2, I'm from Oklahoma and don't really have ties to any other state, however I would really prefer to work elsewhere (Texas, Chicago, KC/Stl, Ohio, Philly)

Based on this years numbers/lsn data I figure I could get into the following schools, some with decent $$

KU
Mizzou
Houston
Illinois
Iowa
Ohio St
Wisconsin
Case Western
Temple
Villanova

With scholarships and family help I could graduate from any of these schools w/o debt/little debt. My questions are:
Would attending one of these schools be enough to establish ties to the area or would I still be at a disadvantage?
Is going to any of the above schools even worth it? My goal is to work at a law firm/govt.

Iowa or UIUC for free wouldn't be a bad choice. But I'm guessing your family would be chipping in heavily to make it free for you.

If they're footing that much of the bill, why not retake and try to get into some better schools? Do you want to keep the biglaw option on the table? If so, retaking is even more TCR, none of these schools gives you more than a 30% shot at biglaw/fedclerk.

I'm retaking in Sept, hopefully I can improve enough to get into WUSTL/SMU. Big law would be great but is nearly impossible from most of these schools so I'm not expecting it.

Just wondering--what makes you want to work in those places specifically if you don't have any connections there?

I've been to all of these places many times and prefer them to Oklahoma. I never lived in any of them though.
