Past data seems to imply you were better off as a reverse-splitter than as a splitter though. I really hope UT doesn't succumb to those TTTTTTacticsWill_McAvoy wrote:Especially with the new 10% no LSAT rule I doubt they'll start preferring reverse-splitters to splitters in the near future, but that's something to consider.Attax wrote:Unless this was just a test year for the LSAT pref over GPA pref. Re: UT at sticker?
I'm currently living at home, but I won't be if I attend law school. I don't know the proportion yet. And as I said before, I understand it's wrong to assume you will do well in law school. I just meant that i'm confident in myself, as are many students.Brut wrote:You still haven't answered if you're living at home and the proportion of the COA covered by loans
So i'm going to assume that your actual COA is $197k, which LST says is in-state COA when factoring in cost inflation, origination fees, and interest
This isn't remotely defensible
You have no idea how well you'll do in law school when you're on a curve with other intelligent, motivated people with the numbers to get into a top school
Figure out what the likely salary outcome is for a student at median in his first year after graduation
Then take out up to that amount

Re: UT at sticker?
If reported salary figures weren't such flame we'd have a clearer answer
I'd hazard a guess that the median student at UT isn't getting biglaw, but is somewhere near the high end of that big spike to the left, maybe in the $60k-$65k range? Idk maybe actual UT students can speak to this
So if this is true, i'd take out up to $65k in loans (or in that neighborhood)
You can pay that off in a reasonable amount of time and live somewhat comfortably while doing so

Based on c/o 2012:
http://www.lstscorereports.com/schools/texas/sals/2012/
The median out of those reported is around $90k

I haven't really looked at/thought about this too deeply but I think the outlook for UT grads might be a bit rosier than you're suggesting. I think 100Kish debt is justifiable and 65K is overly debt averse, but I am open to being proven wrong:Brut wrote:If reported salary figures weren't such flame we'd have a clearer answer

Also, UH has a nice breakdown of salaries at different firms to give you some sense of what the legal market in TX is like. But of course note how many people responded to the survey. Also, this is from a year ago. Anyway, I would expect things to be somewhat better for UT grads.

$65k is hilariously conservative when 42% of the class gets Biglaw or Fedclerk.

Can you link me to the discrepancy? Is it somewhere on the UH website?Brut wrote:@Zuck this is great info, i'll defer to your judgment since you actually go there, but i question how useful salary data is when only 40.1% of employed grads are reporting salaries
actually this chart is confusing, maybe i'm retarded and missing something; any idea why there's such a huge discrepancy between the percentage of employed grads submitting salary data between the pdf you linked to and the website?
Yeah, I throw a bunch of caveats in there to cover my bases I don't think it's super amazingly instructive because of the number reporting. I just think its kind of interesting because UT doesn't provide that much of a breakdown based on firm sizes.

This year. Schools rise and fall in BL+FC year to year, it's silly to make a long-term decision on a single year's data. Three year average at UT is 35.8%. And we're evaluating outcomes at median anyways, those are above median outcomes.WokeUpInACar wrote:$65k is hilariously conservative when 42% of the class gets Biglaw or Fedclerk.

The PDF is from the University of Houston. Sorry. I just posted it because it actually gives a breakdown based on firm sizes and might give some sense of what firms of different sizes in TX pay.Brut wrote:On this page it says 71% of employed c/o 2012 grads reported salary: http://www.utexas.edu/law/career/prospe ... alary.htmlBigZuck wrote:Can you link me to the discrepancy? Not really sure what my point is. I guess maybe I'm saying that I think that 65K is a little low for a median outcome? But again I haven't really thought about it too deeply so maybe I'm way off.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I am going to try negotiating with UT to see if there is anything they can do and then make a decision from there.

Re: UT at sticker?
Just an update for everyone who helped/possibly some guidance for anyone else who might be in a similar position:
I negotiated a scholarship with UT that was enough for me to feel comfortable attending with, especially with my numbers.
Thank you for the advice, and for everyone else with thinking about settling for sticker price, NEGOTIATE. If you don't ask, you won't get anything.
