Hofstra ($$$) vs. UofA (full) vs. Syr ($$)

Post by dr1366 » Tue Apr 29, 2014 2:15 am

I was offered a fellowship position at Hofstra Law. I know that Hofstra has a bad rep on TLS, and I am well aware of the risks of attending. Should I consider attending with tuition fully covered?

My alternate choice is the University of Arizona at sticker. Syracuse offered a decent scholly, but it is more on the back burner.

Everyone here is going to say retake anyway, but you'll need to provide more information if you want any sort of nuance in the responses at all. Why are you going to law school? What do you hope to do? Where are you from? Have you retaken the LSAT yet? What was your GPA? How much is a "decent scholly?"

These schools are all coin flips in terms of their outcomes. Of the grads, approx. 50% not lawyers, 40% will be lawyers making $50k or less, 10% will do well/OK. Are you OK with that?

All this plus what the stips on the scholarship are. In fact it's not a fellowship or a scholarship. At schools like Hofstra that's a sticker discount price that they are hoping to get back in 2L or 3L.

U of A is actually a decent school, but not at sticker and not for someone without AZ ties. I have a feeling the OP just blasted out applications randomly.

I would not say I sent apps randomly. UofA is where I grew up and where I attended undergrad. I genuinely love it here.

Hofstra fellowship program because of my interest in continuing research in child advocacy. Also the home of the editor of Family Court Review.

Both have clinic opportunities and I have connections at both universities.

UofA sound decent for you then. What are the stips?

Hofstra
Top 40% to keep full
Top 50% to keep half
Top 60% to keep 1/4

Which yes, I know is ridiculous. It is one of the reasons I think I will turn it down. They were willing to negotiate my scholarship up but won't drop this tiered renewal structure.

If this were true you would be retaking or not going altogether. None of these schools involves more than a coin flip's chance of being a lawyer, and all 3 are too expensive. The Hofstra "scholarship" is designed for you to lose part of it.

Why not wait a year, work, and retake?

Ignore all the specialty rankings nonsense. They don't mean anything at all. They're marketing tools. Moving across the country to attend a TTTT because they claim to be #1 in a specialty is ridiculous.

If you're from AZ and love it there, great. U of A would be a good choice for you. Just not at sticker. Retake the LSAT.

Since you were scoring in the high 60s on your prep tests, and scored in the 50s on the actual test, you're a prime candidate for a retake.

I am thinking that I will retake the LSAT, as has been suggested to me multiple times.

I have gone through the powerscore books and simulated PT's when studying. As the above poster noted I was PT'ing consistently in 166-169 range but scored only a 156.

How do you recommend I improve my studying to then improve on a retake?

Head on over to the LSAT prep subforum on this site and use those guides/talk to those peeps. Should be of much help to you.

Good luck!

If you're having test day problems and this is all under real timed conditions then you can try desensitizing yourself to the environment by taking them in a hotel lobby or somewhere where the noise will be worse.
