UT 20,000/yr & GWU 30,000/yr, which one?

Post by hector » Tue Apr 15, 2014 2:35 pm

Just received my scholarship information from UT. 5,000/yr plus non-resident tuition exemption.

I love DC, but not THAT much. Placement is my biggest concern. Which one I should attend?

Is that 20K/yr for OOS? If so, you're looking at around 150K COA for Texas.

Do you have ties to the region?

Goals?

Only 5,000 for merit, the tuition exemption is 16,000 per year. Indeed, three years in Texas will be 150K.

I have no ties to Texas. My uncle and aunt live in DC, but i do not think I have strong tie to DC.

Business lawyer, better in large law firms. Actually, I need them to sponsor H1B, since I am an international student.

UT will be closer to 175k with interest, just btw. Neither of these are great options, especially since you don't have Texas ties.

Total cost for resident is $53,536 from their website, https://www.utexas.edu/law/finaid/costs/

Around 50K/yr coa, I think.

Yeah I thought from your post title that you were saying tuition was 20k/year but now I realize that you're saying that's roughly what your scholarship offer is: (16k exemption + 5k scholarship). You'll get more responses if you calculate the full cost of attendance for all three years at both schools. Include interest and loan fees and find the total that you'll owe when you begin repaying it.

The full COA are about the same.

UT: 70K-20K=50K/yr
GW: 80K (According to their estimate)-30K=50K/yr

COA in the two schools may not make much difference for me. Dear Pneumonia, which one do you think I should take when the costs are about the same?

Neither are particularly good options. I'd lean UT since you likely aren't getting DC Biglaw from GWU, and UT places better overall.
