How willing are you to walk away if they offer you nothing or low ball you?

It's not real money. They're not giving you money, just a discount. Ask for 25k, because that's what you want.

I agree that they're not "giving" me anything, but in the end, the money is real for me, because the more I get discounted, the less I will spend. I will be going to the better school regardless, so the money is basically in/out of my pocket, in cash.

I don't want to ask for 25k if it could lessen my chances of getting 15k :-/

I know it's not that large a percentage of the total cost, but 45k (15kX3) total plus interest is serious money, and I don't want to give up/lessen my chances of getting that by getting too greedy. That's why choosing a number is difficult.

I'd ask for $20K personally. Or $15K with absolutely no stips but good standing. YMMV.

Right now I'm thinking maybe I just say 20k, because that's basically saying "look, I understand your school is better, so I'm not expecting you to give me the same amount as the lesser school. I just want some level of discount, because of course I wouldn't need the exact same offer, given that you're a better school." (I'd maybe even say less than that)

Saying 25k, when they specifically said "give us a number that will affect your decision," looks like it could be dumb to me, because of course I don't need the exact same offer to consider attending when the school is better. I think if I'm only getting 25k from a lesser school, 20k is more than reasonable to get as a scholarship from the better school. How could I argue just 5k a year more from the lesser school is really going to make me choose it over the better school? (I know, I'm probably just over thinking this  )

Thoughts?

Yes, this is along the lines of what I was thinking. (As of now, the scholarship offer I have from the lesser school has no stips, and I don't think schools in the league of the "top" school I'm looking at do stips beyond good standing.) By the way, what's YMMV?

Because it's $15,000 at 7.8% per annum. That's not a bad argument. That's a fucking Hyundai, not a dinner at Taco Bell we're talking about here.

I'd probably ask for somewhat more than what my numbers say I should get based on mylsn.info

Georgetown has a bunch of Goofy McGoofersons running the show so you never know what you're gonna get

I'd also be willing to be more or less ballsy depending on how willing I am to walk away

Do you believe Georgetown's practices are indicative of all top schools? I'm not looking at GULC specifically, so just wondering why you used that school as the example?

Oh no, nobody is as goofy as them. They are the only top school I would think would do something like this.

Scratch that then. The other two sentences still apply.

Oh, I see. Thanks for clarifying. This school isn't a T14, but it's a pretty top school, just to clarify.
