Is it worth it to forgo $30,000 for a difference of 2 ranks?

Post by wolvegal44 » Mon Apr 07, 2014 2:05 pm

I am stuck between 2 schools in the top 10 (the bottom 5 of the top 10). One of them has offered me $30,000 over 3 years, so $10,000 per year, and I get in-state tuition. At the other school which is ranked only 2 places above, I have to pay full sticker and they refuse to negotiate.

All and all, I would end up paying approximately $50,000 more to go to the higher ranked one. In addition, it's LRAP program is not as good as the lower ranked school's.

I'm not quite sure where I want to be - either DC or Chicago, and I want to go into public service environmental law.

Is the slight bump in national prestige worth paying so much more?

No, probably not, take the money. I don't see the need to not disclose the schools though, no one is going to revoke your offer or anything. Smart people in this forum could easily figure it based on the info you gave anyways

The better question is whether either of them is worth paying that much for. Even NYU/Penn at sticker is a pretty risky move, and $30k off of a $200k+ total bill is a little like spitting into the wind.

LRAP is a pretty weak reed to be pinning your financial future to.

Its probably Michigan vs UVA in which case no, it isn't worth the difference.
