Can you make multiple deposits to schools?
Can you make multiple deposits to schools? I'm still waiting to hear back from schools and am also wait listed at a few. One school is asking me to deposit soon but I'm not sure if I want to go. At this point I'm thinking I just might send in a deposit. If I do, can I still send deposits to other schools in the future?

To my knowledge, if you send in a deposit, you agree to withdraw from any school that has admitted you. You can still wait for waitlists or those you haven't heard back from yet, but those that have already accepted you you have to turn down. I'm not an expert, though, and I don't know if that's universal or just for the schools I'm looking at. Double check.

Not true (for most schools at least). Read the offer to see if it applies to you (e.g. “depositing at our school binds you to withdrawing all other acceptance offers”)Stubbazubba wrote:To my knowledge, if you send in a deposit, you agree to withdraw from any school that has admitted you. False. There are a handful of schools that say they don't allow you to deposit at multiple schools, but most allow it. I am depositing at three schools and called all of them to confirm it was ok, which all three said it was. This changes for the second deposit (usually early June). You cannot deposit at multiple schools for that one.Stubbazubba wrote:To my knowledge, if you send in a deposit, you agree to withdraw from any school that has admitted you. I can understand throwing away a deposit for a better offer if it comes in, but what is it that keeps you from deciding right now?

Well for me it's for negotiation purposes. If you only deposit at one school, the school has all the leverage and has no reason to increase your scholarship. If you are deposited at 2 or 3 schools, they may feel like they have a real shot at you with a scholarship bump. I'm basically spending a few hundred dollars now in the hopes it saves me thousands in the future. I could easily end up at any of the three schools depending on how the $$ stuff shakes out.TigerDude wrote:I can understand throwing away a deposit for a better offer if it comes in, but what is it that keeps you from deciding right now?
I'm assuming others deposit at multiple schools for the same reason.

Have you already tried to negotiate with these schools?LET'S GET IT wrote: Well for me it's for negotiation purposes. It's incorrect that schools won't increase scholarships after they receive the deposit. In fact, some schools won't negotiate until after the deposit deadline (I assume so that they can be sure they don't overspend their scholarship budget). And I'm pretty sure schools aren't notified of who has made multiple deposits until June or July. I think this was mentioned in the Spivey thread recently so you should look there to confirm.

Schools can find out where you deposited starting on May 15th. You are right, lots of schools won't really negotiate until after the deposit deadline so they can get a feel for their budget and their medians and all that good stuff.JazzieShizzle wrote:Have you already tried to negotiate with these schools?LET'S GET IT wrote: Well for me it's for negotiation purposes. Maybe I wasn't clear, I agree that many schools won't negotiate until you deposit, that's kind of the whole point of putting down multiple deposits. Sorry if I didn't word that very well.
Edit: yes, I have begun negotiating already and was very up front with all the schools that I was depositing at three to keep my options open a little longer.
