Emory or WUSTL

Post by acc123 » Wed Mar 26, 2014 12:51 pm

I've basically narrowed my school list down to Emory or WUSTL.

Not super worried about COA, both are basically the same (within $5k/year) and my family and scholarships will be financing almost all of my education (will finish with less than $50k in debt).

I live in Florida, and like the Southeast US and would not mind ending up there, but also intrigued by NYC and DC. Would be satisfied with making good money in a decent firm and being respected in my trade/known for doing a good job.

Very solid family ties to Georgia (would be fifth generation Georgia resident, strong political and social circles) and I have almost all of my family living in Savannah and Atlanta. Currently have family at WUSTL also, but not as strong ties. Toured WUSTL and really liked it (since I go to a broken public school I would be easily impressed with new and clean buildings). Touring Emory for ASW (April 4)

Got $25k/year from WUSTL
Got $27k/year from Emory

Took the LSAT once, not interested in taking again. At 75% for both LSAT and 25% for GPA for both.

Also still moderately considering UF, GWU, Alabama and BU but time is running out and money isn't looking quite as good (besides UF, but they have their own issues going on right now).

Still have not done final negotiations for merit scholarships, but will be doing so very very soon.

Any insight would be helpful, but please don't tell me to retake since I do not have the GPA for HYS or $$$ at T14.

~Thanks~

Emory. Hands down. Just my opinion.

If you have ties to FL and GA and want to be there after graduation, you should definitely take Emory. Also there are options for NY if you do well enough.

I don't know that much about WUSTL besides LST data, but Emory seems great for your goals and ties. If COA is about the same, of course.

If you will visit both before your final decision, you will have a sense of where you feel is the right fit. Good luck!

Assuming you want to stay around family, Emory is the definite choice

Even as a WUSTL person, Emory is pretty obviously a better fit for you.

I've heard from Emory grads (that incurred serious debt, mind you) that if they had known they were going to stay in ATL, they would have gone to UGA for cheaper. Just a thought nugget for you to dip into some clarity catsup and munch on.

Everyone in my family is UGA/UGA Law alum but if I was going to go the state school route I would just stay at UF and enjoy the next few years skating through life in the local bars and enjoying some Gators sports.

Coach Boom will NOT provide that kind of enjoyment from Gators sports, FYI, if that factors into your decision making process.

Emory will give you more mobility for your geographic preferences than WUSTL and UGA. You can debate endlessly about UGA vs. Emory, but if cost isn't an issue and with GA ties then Emory should win out (you can't overlook the location in Atlanta as a huge factor in helping employment, networking, and getting meaningful internship experience during the year).

Update:

After final negotiations with WashU, I have gotten $33,000/year totaling $99,000 in scholarships, which is very decent. Emory is still at $27,000/year and $81,000 total also decent because I will likely have no debt with either because of family assistance.

I have now toured both WashU and Emory and I favor WashU over Emory in terms of facilities/campus, but Atlanta over St. Louis in terms of city feel and I am about even on the students/academic environment.

Deposit down at Emory (but its only like $250) and deadline extended at WashU.

I eliminated everything else except for UF, ended up getting full tuition with Alabama after negotiations but it just didn't seem like the right fit and I didn't really want to go to Tuscaloosa.

P.S. Any chance of any negotiation at all at Emory, I haven not attempted anything...

can you speak to what you mean by this?

and i am in a similar position and its a toss up. emory is better in NYC if you ask me, but those school funded positions emory does skew their true employment stats.

but i was told by some students at WashU that its really hard to leave the midwest from there, and even to get into Chicago becuase you compete with Uchicago, northwestern and illinois

i dunno, in your shoes id probably go washU

but then again Emory didnt feel right for me when i was at the visiting day.

again tho can you elaborate more on the problems UF is having?

Emory historically does not negotiate scholarships. Generally why they usually give you a large offer up front.

It will be an uphill battle if you want the Southeast from WUSTL. Emory also has a strong presence in NYC if you wanted that. At the end of the day the campus/facilities should be less of a factor in deciding where to go.

Money and where you want to work should dominate the discussion. WUSTL is the Emory of the midwest. Emory is, well, the Emory of the Southeast. Both place in NYC, but both are way outclassed in NYC. Good luck deciding

UF not having a real Dean for two year (they called off their year long search until next year), employment numbers slacking somewhat and larger than average tuition increases every year are most annoying
