GEMJRERCHS wrote:Though the T10/T14, according to US News, have seen little meaningful fluctuation of school rankings over the past decade, there are lower ranked schools like Emroy that fluctuates between 19 and 30 in the past few years, and USC, which had been 18th for several years, now ties with two other school at the 20th. So, my question is, how much does rise or drop of rankings affect real attorneys?
Not at all. It's completely irrelevant.

It took a while but I have finally come to the realization that the whole “best schools” status is forever locked.

It did not make much any difference when our ranking jumped to 14th then when it dropped back to 15th. I admittedly took a little ribbing from an associate (non-UT grad) when I recently dropped by the firm, “I see you guys choked again.” So yes, they see the rankings and maybe even derive an opinion or two but nothing really ever seems to come from it. Not as far as I can tell.

The only school whose ranking, i.e. Perception of prestige, may have affected their image to the public and maybe some firms is Hastings. I do feel bad for C/O 2014. But that's more a product of their horrific employment numbers than US News.

Hastings has fallen so hard. Looking at senior attorney profiles in SF, Hastings used to do decently well. Now it boasts a 46.3% employment score with a large amount of their "big law" numbers being what appear to be low paid staff attorney positions.

How does it affect a school like Illinois though? Historically a top-20/25 but now a T-40. I'm assuming it will probably drop into the 30's next year, but still, it's gotta make some kind of difference.

No. It's a private magazine company. No difference.

It matters to you (0L I'm assuming) and so it matters to deans. /thread.

Illinois' employment numbers have gone up the past 2 years so I don't think it mattered with attorneys. It probably made a difference with some 0Ls applying. It was also punishment for lying and not really about the performance and most people probably know that. I think rankings only hurt when it is huge drops over a longer period of time. Year to year doesn't really matter

Everyone's employment numbers have gone up the last two years.

People keep trying to associate reputation with us news rankings.... You all realize that schools had reputations before 1990 right? Sure, if a school goes to hell over the span of ten years it's reputation will suffer. What does that have to do with us news? 99% of attorneys who make hiring decisions already have opinions about the schools that feed into their areas- so all this rankings hoopla is about the 1% of hiring decisions where an attorney MIGHT consult a rankings magazine to investigate an unknown school?

0Ls try to make this whole chicken/egg thing with ranking and reputation when really rankings have no practical value. This will change when 20 somethings solve their self esteem issues and stop seeking external validation for everything. Can't wait for that, should really be something.
