Do the math and post the costs

Tough spot. I would start by getting Boston out of your head. DC is normally tough, but your ties may help.

I honestly think you've had a bad cycle and should try again next year. Maybe apply more broadly, and hope for better scholarships.. Vandy at 1/2 tuition is still just too much for the job opportunities. UVA and NYU at sticker are out of the question. Maybe you can negotiate with Virginia?

If you're hell bent on going, I guess go to UVA? Seriously though do the math. Seems like you haven't even thought about how much debt you'll be going into.

If you're dead set on biglaw take NYU. Your family loan or paying back your parents will presumably get rid of the interest part, so that's pretty significant.

I hear this frequently, and I work as a paralegal at a big firm in Boston and we have very few UVA people, but many from the rest of the t-14.

Basically, to get Boston biglaw after LS, you either need to go to H or get above a 3.5 at a t-14 or BC/BU. There's very little wiggle room. The market is saturated.

That's interesting to hear. NALP says that UVA gets more Boston firms on campus (a good mix of national biglaws and the biggest old-Boston firms) than any other T14 except H and G. But that doesn't always translate I guess?

The national biglaws (even the ones with Boston predecesor firms) are primarily recruiting for their larger DC or NY offices.

This isn't to say UVA isn't a bad choice if you are interested in Boston, but I know that for Big Law your grades must be high if you are not at H. And for the midlaw and state government jobs, you are competing with the BC and BU kids and their larger alumni networks.

All of this is to say that even if you are hoping for Boston biglaw out of UVA, you better also be bidding New York and DC. Heavily.

There's a difference between Boston firms liking UVA kids and UVA kids choosing Boston. There was a thread where someone talked about this. I'm too lazy to look for it.

The 25-30k is enough to chose UVa in my opinion. It is NYU's peer anywhere except NY. I would take UVa to limit the debt. Plus, UVA is a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. That matters right?

NYU has better placement into biglaw so if you're dead set on that, NYU would be my choice. If you're considering clerkships at all UVA seems to place better into those and the lower COA helps. I would vote NYU but I don't think you'd be making a bad decision in either case. Maybe visit both and see how you like the culture at each.

my vote is for nyu. the slightly better employment prospects are worth the slightly lower cost.

re: clerkships, yall need to stop looking at ONE YEAR of clerkships to determine a school's placement. go back a year and uva and nyu are equal in terms of clerkships, but nyu still beats uva in terms of biglaw. it's pretty clear looking at lst that nyu > uva, even if the advantage is slight.
