Re: What would you pick?
What are your other priorities? For example, would you rather have a Big Law job not in Miami, or a Miami legal job that was not Big Law?
Sticker anywhere just makes me queasy.

Re: What would you pick?
If your goal is any biglaw if you don't get Miami take penn.
If your goal is to work in Florida with a small chance of biglaw take one of the Florida schools with $$$.
There's no school that gives you a great chance at Miami since it's such a small market, so consider what you would want to do if you don't get it.

Re: What would you pick?
My goal primarily is to be located in Miami. I give BigLaw in Miami priority. I also understand that going to a T-14 would give me a better chance because I would not have to get as high as grades to have a chance, where at Miami I would need to be 10% minimum.
Thanks for responses.

If you care more about the Miami part than the Big Law part, go to Miami for free IMO.

+1. But as mentioned if you would rather have big law in NYC or Chicago than small law in Miami go to one of the t14s. Though I would try and get some money cause 250k in debt is just frighteningTheSpanishMain wrote:If you care more about the Miami part than the Big Law part, go to Miami for free IMO.

Re: What would you pick?
For Miami people at t-14 it's easier to get v-10 from an NYC firm than a Miami firm. It's that tiny, and that competitive. UM top 10 percent seems to beat out top third at t-14's for the few jobs available. Miami clients like Miami LR more than UPenn. It's just unlikely to happen in general, and bidding only Miami can make for a bad time. I really wouldn't operate with that being the goal. There's no magic cutoff. It's just not an option to plan around. If you can finance it where 60k/yr would be good then FL. If not take a t-14.

Pepperjack.
I kind of understood what you were saying. But at the end you say happy with 60k/yr. There are over 10 different firms in Miami that pay over 100k. Are you saying that those jobs are taken by students in the T-14, or that Miami Law students have little chance to securing those positions?

I have gotten a lot more votes then responses. UVA and Penn at sticker seem to be winning by a huge amount, anyone care to chime in and tell me why?

That's cause you haven't answered if you would rather be in Miami no matter what or NYC big law. If Miami is your preference and you would be cool having a 60k job there go to Miami. If you would rather have 160k job in NYC over the 60k job in Miami, go to Penn or UVA. Miami big law is really hard so no matter where you go you can't bank on it.Mr.Esquire wrote:I have gotten a lot more votes then responses. It also might be because you didn't include scholarship offers or cost of attendance for Miami.Mr.Esquire wrote:I have gotten a lot more votes then responses. UVA and Penn at sticker seem to be winning by a huge amount, anyone care to chime in and tell me why?

I thought that Miami was full scholarship. OP, of it isn't you need to get it to a full ride or not even consider MiamiMullens wrote:It also might be because you didn't include scholarship offers or cost of attendance for Miami.Mr.Esquire wrote:I have gotten a lot more votes then responses. Miami is full ride.
I did answer the question about salary. I would not be interested in making 60k. But I want to be in Miami. Like I said I know 10+ firms that offer 100k salaries, so I was confused, on whether the point trying to be made is that going to Penn or a T-14 will leave you with more of a shot at those jobs because you don't have to be in the top5% like you would at Miami Law.

Re: What would you pick?
41% of Miami's class of 2012 did not have full time legal work within 9 months of graduation. I wouldn't go for free.
5.6 percent of Penn's students didn't have full time legal work within 9 months of graduation. And 23% didn't land federal clerkships or biglaw. The non discounted cost is approximately $267,000 . . . but it will be higher for you because tuition will go up the next three years, just like it did the last three years. I wouldn't go with less than a 30k/yr scholarship.
5.5 percent of UVA's students didn't have full time legal work within 9 months. Another 14.8% are counted as having full-time legal work, but were employed by the school in 1 yr jobs. 38% did not land biglaw or a federal clerkship. The sticker cost will be $264,000, but it will be more for you because tuition will go up all three years, just like it has the last 3. I wouldn't go with less than a 35k/yr scholarship.
Get a better LSAT score and reapply. If you can't get better deals than this find a different career.

10 firms isn't a lot though because they're not bringing in 50 person SA classes. There aren't that many spots considering all the people that are from Miami at t14s and UMiami that want them. On TLS people will say that you should plan for the median. The median at Miami is about 60k. You will need to be top 10% at Miami to get big law. If you don't get that you'll be looking at a salary of around 60k. For Miami big law from UVA/Penn you probably need to be top 1/4 or so, but if you don't get that you'll be safe for big law in NYC as long as you're at median. That's probably why people are picking those schools. With that said I wouldn't want to do sticker anywhere so I would try and play Penn and UVA against each other for some money.Mr.Esquire wrote:Miami is full ride.

You can't have it both ways. Your chances of getting a 100k plus job in Miami are small from anywhere. You'd have more of a shot from a T14, but the market is so small that it's not a great shot.Mr.Esquire wrote:Miami is full ride.

So really you either need to prioritize being in Miami and accept you might have a lower salary (or none), or be more flexible geographically.
