I'm just saying there is an anchoring problem. NYU is ranked number six. I wouldn't want to go to the school in the bottom of the top six. I would rather go to Penn, which is the top of the bottom fourteen. It's a matter of perception and these things matter to employers.
NYU has not always been ranked number 6. It was ranked 4th in 2008, 2007, 2001, 1999/2000, and was ranked 5th in several years.
See
http://www.law.stanford.edu/sites/defau ... l-rp20.pdf
Basing a prestige/reputation argument just on this year's or last year's ranking seems absurd.
Moreover, in terms of top NY firms placement, there does seem to be a clear top 6 distinction.
Paul Weiss (NY):
NYU: 95
Penn: 37
Cleary (NY):
NYU: 118
Penn: 30
Sure, Penn has a smaller class size and many Penn grads may not want to work in NY. But when the difference in numbers is this huge, I speculate that a difference in chance (or preference of employers) may be a factor here.
Besides, it's understandable why firms want T6. Entry standards are highest at HYSCCN.

Oh so you're saying someone should base their decision on costs and benefits with regard to employment statistics instead of dumb bright lines? This is shocking.
How you mark a school as a number 6 school is nonsense, when the positions within CCN shift.
It all depends on where you are aiming for. For the NY market, it's HYSCCN. But in other regions, I'm sure Penn should give you as great opportunities as NYU.

I think adding Penn would be the CR. Is there a gap then between Penn and UVA? Berkeley?
At what point would you say, "NEVER PAY STICKER FOR THAT"?

I'm sure he was being too extreme. But he meant something like t10 I suppose.
Highest fed clerkshp? Not sure about that.

Highest biglaw? We always need to take that data with a grain of salt. Not all graduates try to enter biglaw. Many HYS and Chicago grads seek to enter academia or become judges. Many NYU grads pursue careers in public interest.

Sounds like an elitist partner to me. LS might not be a good investment for many, but nothing other than T6? Come on...

GTFO UChi. Tied with Berk and #7 in 2008? Doesn't sound like T6 behavior to me.
So over it.

redundant.
tbf i think he went a bit overboard with the comment. not that there isn't any merit in the statement. such as tiago's point that it may scare away prospective law students if it gets spread around enough. because we are all elitist deep down and want all the jobs for ourselveses

Did the partner actually say T6? I've heard partners mostly say "Top 10" or "Top 5".

Plenty of folks at Penn/UVA/Berk at V20 firms. More from T6 obviously.
T10-14 less so.
Next.

What? You mean to tell me that a school that graduates nearly 550 people has more associates at two firms you pulled out of your ass than a school that graduates just north of 200? Color me shocked!
I bet NYU has more than Yale, too. So NYU > Yale?
