Chicago vs. Michigan vs. Northwestern
Just got accepted to Chicago! I was currently debating between Michigan and Northwestern..so my question is: what reasons, if any, are there for me to pick either of these schools over Chicago (besides scholarships, which I currently have none of)

Re: Chicago vs. Michigan vs. Northwestern
If money is equal at all places, I can't think of a single legitimate reason (I will grant you that I am primarily interested in employment outcomes, and I don't think there's anything that Michigan or Northwestern do better than Chicago in this regard). The biggest knock on Chicago, I think, is the weather, but that's also a wash if these are the three schools you're considering.omzster67 wrote:Just got accepted to Chicago! Thanks - I just want to get a full view of all the schools. I've heard about the cut-throat nature at Chicago and those related knocks, just looking for more...if any even exist.elterrible78 wrote:If money is equal at all places, I can't think of a single legitimate reason (I will grant you that I am primarily interested in employment outcomes, and I don't think there's anything that Michigan or Northwestern do better than Chicago in this regard). Going off stereotypes...
Chicago: Competitive
Michigan: Collegial
Northwestern: Business-focused
But ignore that. Like elterrible78, I believe job prospects are the most important and Chicago is far and away better than the others (especially in terms of value if all schools cost the same).

Let Michigan & Northwestern admissions know of your Chicago offer. Then this should become a bit more interesting.

Chicago can be a pretty miserable place, but some of that is just law school. If you can't get Mich or NW to budge on $$$ then there is very little reason to take them over Chicago.

Is this an accepted practice? I know you can negotiate scholarships when you actually have money on the table, but I don't have anything from Michigan yet and haven't submitted my scholarship app to Northwestern yet.CanadianWolf wrote:Let Michigan & Northwestern admissions know of your Chicago offer. Wait until you have initial offers from all the schools firstomzster67 wrote:Is this an accepted practice? You'll still get a message telling you you got nothing. As far as what to do if all three schools give you nothing, I suppose it's worth a shot negotiating with just an acceptance but idk how well that works.omzster67 wrote:And if none come?Crowing wrote:Wait until you have initial offers from all the schools firstomzster67 wrote:Is this an accepted practice? Re: Chicago vs. Michigan vs. Northwestern
Honestly, I found Michigan's admissions marketing tactics to be incredibly annoying and lame, so that was enough to turn me off of them. Not that I ever got in anyways. Northwestern's location is a lot cooler and their building is nicer, but that's not really a good reason to pick them over uchi.

Given that you didn't like the attitude of the place, Michigan is probably not especially unhappy that you chose to go elsewhere.aena wrote:ChampagnePapi wrote:Honestly, I found Michigan's admissions marketing tactics to be incredibly annoying and lame

As to the question.
Chicago: Hyde Park really does suck, but Chicago is cool. And it gives you the best job prospects.
Northwestern: Best location, if you want to be in a city. Slightly worse on the job market than UofC.
Michigan: It's beautiful. Lower cost of living. More colloquial.
You should seek some $$.

Re: Chicago vs. Michigan vs. Northwestern
Thanks for the insight. I'll be visiting each school in the next 6 weeks, but I have heard the same things about the Hyde park area. As for $$..I asked this earlier but it is worth asking again, what approach should I take in trying to get anything from NU/Mich given that I haven't received anything yet?CTT wrote:Given that you didn't like the attitude of the place, Michigan is probably not especially unhappy that you chose to go elsewhere.aena wrote:ChampagnePapi wrote:Honestly, I found Michigan's admissions marketing tactics to be incredibly annoying and lame

UChicago is a solid step ahead of the other two professionally, academically, and otherwise. You would need a substantial disparity in $$$ (like $50K+ COA) or a very unique extenuating circumstance to justify NU or Michigan here.

NU doesn't even start notifying about scholarships until late March.omzster67 wrote:Thanks for the insight. Rephrase this in a kind way:omzster67 wrote:Thanks for the insight. I'll be visiting each school in the next 6 weeks, but I have heard the same things about the Hyde park area. "Yo, school, I got in at the University of Chicago, and it's ranked higher than your shop. Toss is $20k a year and I'll send in a deposit. Otherwise, no thanks."
And, come to think of it, if the above is accurate, don't state a number to Northwestern until they make you an offer or decline to.
