Help!

Post by abrahm » Fri Feb 21, 2014 4:33 pm

I'm looking for some advice. My cycle is complete and I have determined my best option right now. Should I take it? I have a good amount in savings that should cover my living expenses for about my first two years. However, I will probably still end school with somewhere around 70k in debt. Is Wake Forest a sound investment at that price or should I sit out and take the LSAT again in June and reapply next year? HELP!

What are your career goals?
Where are you from?
Where do you have ties?
Where would you prefer to work?
What are your numbers?

The amount of debt is reasonable if youre cool with a modest legal job in NC. However, you would definitely be overpaying.

I want to work in corporate law, I would be satisfied with a mid sized firm. I definitely do not want to be stuck at something too small (like 3-4 attorneys). I do have ties to the DC area, a couple big firms and two federal judges. I would be happy working in NC for a while but I would want to option of possibly one day working in New England because that is where my family and my SO's family is... Not sure if that will be possible with Wake. As long as I can comfortably repay the 60-70k then I would be ok with the investment.

I agree with Nova. You would be paying way too much for a school that doesn't match your career goals.

What would suitable career goals out of Wake be from your perspective?

Working at a small firm or a local government office in North Carolina.

In a vacuum, Wake for $70k is a decent deal if you wanted to work in NC and were ok with small law. But it doesn't sound like that's the case here. First, you want national mobility and you won't find that from Wake. Second, you don't want to work at a small firm, but that's a real possibility: if you're one of the lucky 68% who finds employment, the likelihood of it being at a small firm or solo (12.2%) are only slightly less than the chance of it being biglaw (14.7%). And because Biglaw probably isn't happening, corporate law probably isn't happening either. It doesn't seem like Wake is right for your goals.
