Rutgers ($) vs. Temple ($) vs. Vanderbilt ($)

Post by wlee1220 » Fri Feb 21, 2014 12:37 am

So far, I've been admitted into Rutgers-C, Temple, and Vanderbilt. Here's the relevant info (the scholarships have already been deducted out of the COA):

COA: Rutgers 70K (36K scholarship over 3 years, top 60% stip); Temple 81K (60K scholarship, good standing); Vanderbilt 150K (75K over 3 years, good standing)

Financing: Will be paying for school mostly through loans. If I attend Rutgers or Temple, I will be moving back home to cut down on expenses, so I may be able to reduce my expenses here a bit.

Ties: Originally from Philly/South Jersey region and have lots of family and a pretty good network there. I've also spent 5+ years working in Atlanta and wouldn't mind returning there for work. My SO is from Atlanta and wants to ultimately relocate close to home, so that's a plus for Atlanta.

Goals: I am PI focused. I've done quite a bit of nonprofit work for fair housing organizations and currently work on housing policy issues as a consultant with my current nonprofit. I have an interest in HUD/DOL, but I don't think these schools would get me there. Biglaw is basically out at Temple/Rutgers-C, but I would consider it depending on Vanderbilt's final offer. I have a background in labor/employment policy and currently work as a consultant to a faith-based nonprofit, mainly on initiatives based on trends in healthcare policy and how the ACA will foster employment and job training opportunities in low-income communities. I worked for about a year after undergrad with the USDA too.

Numbers: 3.4, 151/155/160 URM.

Other Info: Sitting out and retaking would be an option if I haven't already used up my three LSAT takes. I would rather not work at my current job another year +, but if I have to I would. I have already put off going to law school long enough and I'm ready just to go ahead and go. Waitlisted at Penn, Duke and UVA. I'm not as opposed to biglaw as I used to be (mainly because if I choose Vanderbilt I would need biglaw to pay back those loans).

Vandy just sent their offer: $25k for 3 years. On my phone and don't feel like doing the math now, but I'm looking at $150k before interest. Is that worth it for Vandy as a URM with strong ties to Atlanta?

I don't think I would do Vandy for much more than 100K but maybe PI changes the calculus

I would defer to Rad on this one

Maybe I did my math wrong just now, but I am looking at $150K with interest it seems like from Vandy.
