A question of probabilities: choosing the right school
Hey guys,
I wanted to get feedback from TLS users on what school they would choose if presented the following offers. In this scenario, let's say your going to work your ass off in law school and have the intellectual skills to do very well academically. At the T14-50s let say you will be top 5% of class while at the T50+s you will be the top. No real preference for post-grad employment, but you do want to be employed and hopefully be earning somewhere between 80K+ as an entry level attorney. As little debt as possible is best (obviously).
T14: Cornell ($10,000 p/y), GULC ($10,000 p/y), Duke (10K), Michigan (10K),
T14-T50: BU ($25,000 p/y), Fordham ($10,000 p/y), BC ($30,000K), Texas (20,000K), GWU (20,000K)
T50+: UConn (Free), Cardozo (Free)
Where do you choose to go?

Well since you are smarter than the other 95% of students who can get into the T14, go wherever you want. Top 5% isn't an unreasonable expectation and you definitely won't be upset when you are at median after the first semester.

Because you will definitely be the only person in your class that this describes.mikamana wrote:In this scenario, let's say your going to work your ass off in law school and have the intellectual skills to do very well academically.

Re: A question of probabilities: choosing the right school
I am going to assume this isn't some inane hypo and is actually your situation. If you really want to talk probabilities, there is a 5% chance that you will be in the top 5% of your class and there is a 1% chance that you will be in the top 1%. According to a 2010 NALP report, the only 1st-year associates earning 80k+ were those at firms with >50 lawyers. Unfortunately, it looks like you have to choose between poor chances at employment or potentially life-ruining debt. If you were a friend of mine, I would do everything in my power to dissuade you from attending law school.

My first question would be why someone with such prodigious "intellectual skills" would have such underwhelming scholarship offers. And my first suggestion would be that the applicant apply his/her intellectual might toward getting a better LSAT score in order to get scholarship offers more congruous with the applicant's uncommon brilliance.mikamana wrote: I wanted to get feedback from TLS users on what school they would choose if presented the following offers. If BC, UT, and GWU are really offering you $20-30 million per year, choose one of themmikamana wrote:Hey guys,

Dang. I really wish I had caught that first. So OP, aside from switching from addressing the third person to addressing the second person, using the possessive "your" instead of the contraction "you're", and the money typo, would you further like to display your intellectual skills?Taco wrote:If BC, UT, and GWU are really offering you $20-30 million per year, choose one of themmikamana wrote:Hey guys,

The sad thing is that TLSers would have gladly given you candid advice had you asked humbly. Half the people (at least) that have commented on this thread have better numbers than you. You're no snowflake.
Ti Malice's advice is legit. Withdraw your applications, study for the LSAT, and retake.

Beat me to it. He should just go to Harvard, where he'll obviously be top 10-15%, since he would've been top 5% at those other T14s. Clearly that gives him the best odds.Ti Malice wrote:My first question would be why someone with such prodigious "intellectual skills" would have such underwhelming scholarship offers. I think if you believe you can be top 5% and you work really hard than you will achieve it. Grab your bootstraps and reach for the stars OP!
