Kent 20k no stips, SIU full tuition top 55% stip
Hey hey,
The title might indicate what I'm saying well enough, but to elaborate.
I went to SIU for Undergrad and became quite involved in some environmental campaigns, one of which is incomplete and I would like to finish (namely suing a coal plant for ECHO report violations). This practical experience would add to my resume for environmental firms, which would also include the full tuition scholarship, and work experience with the Green Party candidate for governor. I would also be able to graduate with, at worst, $30k less in debt at Southern than at Kent. Though there aren't many job opporunities in the area, I think I could keep busy with legal work just off of that mentioned above.
In Kent's favor, they're higher ranked and in Chicago.
There are no other options available. And.... Go!

Have your parents set up a trust fund contingent on you attending a TTT law schools by the year 2014? If not, there are other options.Younks wrote:

Re: Kent 20k no stips, SIU full tuition top 55% stip
Here's some more information....
-I was accepted to Kent (20k a year no stips), DePaul (25k a year no stips), SIU (full ride top 55% stip)
-Kent would cost 90k to 140k total, depending on if and when I lived at home, SIU would be at most 60k since I would only need to pay for cost of living
-I'll only be using loans to fund this
-I'm from Chicago, would like to start my own firm, and know someone in Carbondale who said he would help me do this. I've also considered working as an immigration attorney overseas, and the minimal debt accrued by Southern would help with this, plus I'm confident I could work with an immigration attorney in Carbondale
-My career goals are to be elected governor of a wealthy state and misappropriate finances to move to the moon with a harem of redhead and Asian women and build a death ray to enslave mankind. Failing that, to either run my own firm or to work on environmental class action suits.
-158/2.94 but with strong public service record (mostly environmental, some anti-death penalty work)
-Twice taken the LSAT - 158 in June 2011, ?? in June 2013. I'm not feeling good about that one though, since I overstudied and was exhausted by test day. I took a year off to study and really don't want anything more to do with the test, seeing as I feel I just wasted a year.

You seem to know retaking is far and away the best option. SIU is certainly the less bad option but you have to be 100% committed to dropping out without the scholly.

Negotiate with SIU to drop the stips. Absolutely do not attend Kent or DePaul without a full ride + no stips.

How did you take an entire year off to study and manage to be exhausted on test day? Clearly you did it wrong.

That, was a dumb move; but all the more reason to learn from your mistake and retake. Where were you PTing?Younks wrote:Overpreparation on the day of the test (the morning before)

Of those options, SIU is the only one that isn't terrible. It's not good, but at least you won't be buried in debt when you can't find a job. If you're really planning on going solo, it's absolutely essential you graduate debt free because of the massive startup capital and operating expenses associated with hanging a shingle, and because of the high likelihood it won't work out (realistically, most solos fail).
Of course, that route also implies you are ok with dropping out if you lose your scholarship.

Got up to like 164, though without a tutor. Screw, I'm just taking the full ride - I'll probably graduate with like 40k in debt.Clearlynotstefan wrote:That, was a dumb move; but all the more reason to learn from your mistake and retake. Get that top 55% stip dropped or you're basically flipping a coin on wasting an entire year of your life.Younks wrote:Got up to like 164, though without a tutor. Screw, I'm just taking the full ride - I'll probably graduate with like 40k in debt.

Unless this "person you know" gives you some kind of guarantee (whether by contract or promissory Estoppel) that he/she will give you a job and/or startup money to start your own firm you should in no way, shape or form attend SIU. Seriously, unless my dad was
"K,", "L", or "Gates" in "K&L Gates" I'd likely never attend SIU.

This. Only SIU makes any sense at all and only if free.Ded Precedent wrote:Negotiate with SIU to drop the stips. Absolutely do not attend Kent or DePaul without a full ride + no stips.
You may have done better on the LSAT than you think. Update us once you get your score.

You need HYS (maybe CCN if you're top 15%) to do this.Younks wrote:...move to the moon with a harem of redhead and Asian women and build a death ray to enslave mankind.
