NYU v. UVA Forum

Alright, after forever, NYU finally came to me with the scholly offer, and it was better than I expected, so I now have a tough decision to make. Other than the obvious (retake/negotiate for more scholly), what do you guys think of my options:

NYU: 87.5k (105k) scholly
UVA: 105K scholly in-state tuition (5k off tuition per year)
NU: 90k
UMichigan: 75K

I think this still ends up as UVA winning it, but I feel that it's close with the more than half-offer from NYU. What say you? Goals are standard TLSer: BigLaw, maybe a clerkship if I have the grades but not something I'm going to hang my hat on. Geographical preference is Chicago, Philly, or NYC (basically anywhere but the South and the West). COA is as follows:

NYU: 182k at graduation
UVA: 120K at graduation
NU: 184K at graduation
Michigan: 169K

TLS fail. The answer should have been ED UVA. Now you have decisions to make. I feel like NYU COL would be a hell of a lot higher than UVA, so there's that. I'm pretty sure UVA still wins.

I would take UVA. Its a great offer that would put you in a tremendous position. Since you dont have any impractical/special snowflake goals (eg International PI or whatever), go to UVA.

NYU only has the edge on UVA by 4% when comparing combined Biglaw and clerkship placement. 36K seems pretty steep for that kind of marginal improvement.

Based on tuition cost alone, I'd say NYU is the winner.


Where would you rather live for LS/any preference for where you work?

Do you plan to stay at biglaw as long as possible? Other aspirations after your debt is paid off?

From what I can tell, not getting a biglaw job is by far your worst outcome and for that reason I'd pick NYU. Gratz on the amazing scholarship btw.


If you would rather spend 3 years at UVA (Cheaper/bigger/etc) than NYU, UVA can be defended.


ETA: 182k vs 120k is actually pretty significant. If you just want biglaw, I'd probably go UVA actually.

OP Updated. No real geographical preference... don't want the South but will go where the jobs are. I plan on staying in Biglaw, since I'm used to long, awful hours of mind-numbing labor, so I think it's something that won't beat me down too much, but I'm also aware as a 0L I don't know shit and that could all change. My preference hinges on being debt-averse and wanting the best outcome... I have a pretty standard outlook. I'm going to use the NYU offer to negotiate at UVA, especially since I paid the deposit, but as it stands now here are my options.

Graduating UVA with 120k in debt is the correct answer. You will likely end up with the same outcome as you would have going to NYU and 120k is a manageable amount. If biglaw works out, you will likely be out of debt in 2-3 years.

I would probably lean towards UVA, but NYU made the price right to be competitive. Kind of sad that 105k off sticker is still almost 200k in debt.

While I agree that OP should choose UVA, let's not base everything on one year of stats. Still, unless OP is gunning exclusively for NY, NYU provides a marginal advantage if it provides an advantage at all. It basically places on par with Penn, UVa, Duke and Berkeley in big law if you look at stats over the last several years.

Currently using his study guide for June retake. And he previously stated he got a 179 for the record.
