Is NYU at sticker worth it?
NYU told me that they're not giving me any money. I'd like to go into BigLaw, but I'm starting to have doubts about graduating with around $300,000 in debt. Is paying sticker for NYU worth it?

I really don't think so. Huge amount of debt, and you have a coin flip chance of big law.
a) If it's heads, congrats, and if you can stay in big law you will have paid off the debt and have little savings ~5 years out with careful money management. b) If it's tails, you strike out on big law, and graduate with either no job or a job that won't come close to paying off your debt. The debt is not dischargeable, so now you are searching for a job knowing that for years you will have this debt around your neck.

Don't have many options just yet, I've been accepted to Penn but haven't heard anything about money from them yet. Are my chances really a coinflip for Biglaw at NYU? I thought the chances were better than that at that school.

Even if you hit biglaw paying off that debt is not gonna be fun thoughJpreece59 wrote:Don't have many options just yet, I've been accepted to Penn but haven't heard anything about money from them yet. I'm sorry but I don't think it is, especially living in NYC. If you can't get big law, the COA is only going to compound your problems. Not to mention so many people leave big law after just 2 or 3 years. If you were to find out it wasn't for you, you'd be in even more trouble. I'm sure your admission to NYU means you have some other decent options w/ $$$Jpreece59 wrote:NYU told me that they're not giving me any money. It would take a MINIMUM of $15,000 a year for me to attend.

This. It depends on what your other options are.rad lulz wrote:What are your other options
Also why on earth would you have $300k in debt at graduation? Do you have significant undergrad debt?

TCR is no. Absolutely not. You're stupid for even thinking it. You're an idiot? Are you joking? Look at LST!!! For God's sake!!! This is TCR. Don't attend NYU at sticker you will be miserable for the rest of your life if you do.
But seriously. To be fair, it does seem TCR is attend T10/14 w/ money over sticker NYU.

NYU has one of the highest COA's in the T14. Of course that's probably on the high end of what he'll be borrowing, but its not far off.Nelson wrote:This. It depends on what your other options are.rad lulz wrote:What are your other options

At ASW I was told that 84% of 2L's who wanted a law firm gig, had one. I think she meant 84% of EIW participants received an offer, but I'm not sure. That's an oddly shaped coin though.Jpreece59 wrote:Don't have many options just yet, I've been accepted to Penn but haven't heard anything about money from them yet. NYU gives you a better shot at biglaw than a flip of a coin. Nothing outrageous but over 50%. If you're paying sticker at a school that isn't HYS, you're doing something wrong though.

Re: Is NYU at sticker worth it?
OP you should probably wait and see what offers come later. It might look like your only options are PREFTIGE at sticker or shoddy job prospects at a nice discount, but you'll probably have more/better options later in the cycle. I wouldn't start worrying until seat deposit time comes around.
(To answer your question, I'm not sure NYU at sticker is worth it, but I'd understand why people would do it. One thing I don't quite get from the reasoning of some folks on TLS is that a moderately sized scholarship (say 75k) seems to be treated like a game changer. It certainly would make repayment much nicer, but if you end up without a job you're still in an awful situation. If you have a cheaper option that lets you avoid sticker costs while still having decent job prospects, that's certainly better, but very very few students are going to get HUGE financial aid packages from top schools.)

Re: Is NYU at sticker worth it?
I think NYU at sticker is worth it. 80 percent of people received at least one offer last year. Also, a small scholarship would be nice but if you are looking at 300k in debt it shouldn't be the deciding factor. NYU is a beast when it comes to placing into NYC big firms. Keep in mind that TLS is overly pessimistic and most people on here are 0L's who don't know what they are talking about. In my opinion, if you are looking for NYC big law then NYU is a great school.

As opposed to a 1L with one semester under his belt who hasn't been through OCI yet?law2015 wrote:I think NYU at sticker is worth it. 80 percent of people received at least one offer last year. Its interesting how everyone is a no. I posted the same question for Penn with a poll and over 75% said yes. Is it that the No's are just more likely to post their reason why or something else I'm not seeing?
