Oklahoma Schools

Post by okiedokie33 » Sat Nov 24, 2012 12:07 am

I guess this would be difficult for those of you who aren't from this area to answer but basically I want to know if OU always beats out Tulsa/OCU. I know OU is king in Oklahoma but if Tulsa/OCU are about 30k cheaper is it worth it to go to one of those schools. Total Cost at OU would be about 60k, OCU 25K, Tulsa 28K. Also I am from Oklahoma

I have no direct experience with the OK market, but I'm from here and know a few people who have done OU and TU law [warning anecdotes ahead]. The OU people seem to have had success in finding things around OK, the TU grad stayed in Tulsa, but that might have been self-selection rather than lack of mobility.

LST has TU as actually edging out OU in the employment score: ( http://www.lstscorereports.com/?r=ok ), and both are significantly better than OCU.

Going to any of these schools, you need to minimize debt as much as possible. All things considered, if you're set on going to one of these with the current circumstances, I'd chose Tulsa.

Also, I'm going to add the obligatory but reasonable suggestion that you retake the LSAT and aim for a big scholarship/full ride at OU/TU. There's no real reason you should need to pay significant money to any of these schools if you put in the legwork to study hard.

OU is better than TU, and I would personally pay 30k for the difference. Both alumni networks are loyal, so if your clever and reasonably likable, you'll probably get some job out of either one. Usually the alumni from OU are in a better position to help you out. LST may have shown higher numbers from TU last year, but OU grads usually get the more sought after jobs.

I'd go to OU and try to start out with a small firm or gov for around 45k.

Be ware that those scholarships at Tulsa come with difficult GPA requirements to renew. You can't safely assume you'll be able to get your scholarship all three years. Only go to Tulsa if you're planning on dropping out if you don't make the required GPA. Tulsa's definitely not worth being over 100k in debt.
