T14 with biggest ED boost

Post by downwithflames43 » Thu Oct 25, 2012 12:09 am

Curious on consensus. I've heard that ED at UVA is a pretty big boost, true story?

If you're above a median and not a murderer, sure.

I've seen people get in with 161's and 162's and like a 4+ GPA. I'd say its a pretty hefty boost to ED if you're above a median at UVA, is it not?

Was the "is it not?" really necessary when I just said the same thing above you?

UVA isn't so much of a boost as it is a requirement. Basically no one has numbers good enough to be an auto-admit since they WL like 97% of their qualified applicants so you can either ED, pray, or spam them with LOCIs.

Penn is similar but not as blatant as UVA is.

Because of that I'd say NYU probably. They tend to be one of the more predictable T14s, and EDing gives a direct boost.

Nice breakdown. Did not know NYU was like that.

Lest anyone disagree with me btw, I should say that I am thoroughly unfamiliar with Duke's admission's practices (my GPA was TTT for them), GULCs ED situation (signing up for sticker there is worse than roulette odds), and I consider Michigan a wild card because they appear to be vaguely holistic and the required summer start thing is an unknown insofar as some see it as a plus some hate it.

As far as I'm aware, NYU isn't. (unless you're just referencing being predictable w/ numbers-whoring)

What do people think about:

Chi's ED
And Penn's new 2nd Round ED?

This is overblown, I think.

I got in RD, above one median and below the other, but only after I sent them a decent LOCI and a Why UVA. They told me I could go f*** myself on scholarship though, because they wouldn't give me any money if I wasn't above both medians.

I'd say NYU.

UVA, as mentioned, isn't a boost as much as it is a requirement. UVA is a school you go to if you're willing to pay sticker for a lock at T14, and it doesn't make much sense for them to admit you if you're above both medians and likely to go to somewhere like Chicago or Duke with money instead.* Penn is similar, but less obvious, and I'm guessing they purposefully marginalize their requirement-mentality this way by waitlisting and then accepting splitters.

NYU ED gives a substantial boost. If you're over the LSAT median and under the GPA median, you're a lock with ED, and maybe waitlisted without it.

I think this cycle, Columbia ED will give more of a boost than it did in the past, though nowhere near NYU's.

*I also say this from a URM perspective, as UVA gives substantially less URM boost than do other T14s.

The 97% is clearly overblown, but can you point to anyone whose numbers make them a safe bet for UVA without ED? Only place that looks promising is 4.0+/172 which is an arbitrary chunk of people.

I know you got in so clearly you have an opinion on it, but it seems tough to contest that their first inclination for every application in the door is WL.

Often on TLS I think general trends often turn into definite rules, which hurts the availability of good information. UVA certainly likes people to ED and is really heavy on WLing people, but I think above media GPA people with 170s or 171s stand a good chance of getting in without EDing or playing the WL game. I just think it is important to remember that schools have general tendencies but certainly deviate from their norms. I almost didn't even apply to UVA because I wasn't planning on EDing anywhere and now I am here. Likewise I didn't apply to NU because I am a K-JD and now I kind of regret it because they do let some K-JDs in, just not as many as other schools.

with a 3.82 gpa what LSAT score would one need in order to be competitive ED at UVA and PENN respectively?

170, perhaps 169 in a down year

At 3.82 your GPA might as well be 3.0 for UVA at least.

If you end up with a 3.82/170 please don't ED anywhere though

Do you happen to know about the ED boost for NYU if you're above the GPA median but below the LSAT median?

It seems like they try and make up lost GPA ground by offering lots of money to students over both medians, so I don't know how much of a boost a reverse splitter would get.

I'll be back with LSN data later.

it basically just depends on by how much..

3.90, 169 (retaken from a 166). I'm above their 75th for GPA and exactly at their 25th for LSAT.

It looks like a minor boost, though perhaps not enough to justify the ED (for reverse splitters):

you'll probably get in ED, and RD will be WL or possibly admit. I would guess that you get in eventually either way if I had to go one way or the other, but the ED makes me pretty confident you get in
